Extractions: Late at night, a beautiful young woman clinging to a makeshift raft looks up into the distance. The sky over the Atlantic Ocean is cloudless and her tired, desperate eyes gaze at the stars, glistening in the heavens so very far away. The scene is simple, elegant and haunting, nicely illustrating why "Titanic" works. Director James Cameron uses a grand sweeping backdrop to tell an elementary love story, and he tells it very well. "Titanic" contains some of the most spectacular visuals ever to appear on screen, but despite the jaw-dropping special effects, it's the human story that lingers after you leave the theater. Cameron has crafted an epic that triumphs because he remembered the crucial fact that affairs of the heart are far more compelling than any special effect.

Extractions: A film score is the background music in a film , generally specially written for the film and often used to heighten emotions provoked by the imagery on the screen or by the dialogue. In some cases, film themes have become accepted into the canon of classical music In many instances, film scores are performed by orchestras , which vary in size, from a small ensemble to a huge number of musicians, perhaps including a choir. The orchestra is either a studio orchestra, employed by the studio, or a performing orchestra such as the London Symphony Orchestra . For films with even smaller budgets, however, and possibly for TV or video games (although these, too, frequently have orchestral scores ), a synthesiser can be used to re-create the sound of an orchestra. This is generally much cheaper, although the results are thought by many to be inferior. A film composer is usually contacted after the film has been shot, and is shown an unpolished 'rough cut' of the film, and talks to the director about what sort of music should be used. He will then work on creating this music. Films often have different themes for important characters, events, ideas or objects, taking the idea from Wagner 's use of leitmotif . These may be played in different variations depending on the situation they represent, scattered amongst incidental music.
Essay On Risk Management -R.Brander Academic article showing how costsavings meant certain death. http://www.cuug.ab.ca:8001/~branderr/risk_essay/titanic.html
Extractions: Roy Brander, P.Eng. I've put off starting this essay for days, because today is so appropriate. As I sit down to write, it is 11:40 PM, April 14th, 1995. Ignoring the time zone difference, it was 83 years ago this minute that the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage in 1912, struck an iceberg. The collision was not head-on. The berg bumped and ground along the starboard side and then was gone into the calm, moonless night. At first, few thought the damage serious. It was difficult to coax passengers into the lifeboats. Yet three hours later, the Titanic slammed into the ocean floor almost 4000 metres below, torn in two. Over 1500 of her passengers and crew were dead. And the design and operation of sea vessels changed dramatically and permanently. Most of the discussion of the accident revolves around specific problems. There was the lack of sufficient lifeboats (enough for at most 1200 on a ship carrying 2200). There was the steaming ahead at full-speed despite various warnings about the ice-field. There was the lack of binoculars for the lookout. There were the poor procedures with the new invention, the wireless (not all warnings sent to the ship reached the bridge, and a nearby ship, the operator abed, missed Titanic's SOS). Very recently, from recovered wreckage, "Popular Science" claimed the hull was particularly brittle even for the metallurgy of the time. (A claim now debunked.) Each has at one time or another been put forward as "THE reason the Titanic sank".
Extractions: There is nothing I can say. It made me cry. I haven't cried in a theater since Ernest Saves Christmas. Go see this film. If it's the last thing you ever do. Well not the last, obviously, I mean I'll want you to come back to the site and play around with us and stuff. Listen to me, I don't make a lick of sense. I really, really liked this movie. 5 Babylons. More. Nothing I can say can make you understand what this movie did to me. But I'll just keep on blabbing away to fill space, since I'm a big-time critic and all that. Heard any good jokes? How about the one with the three-legged pimp with the mustache? It's pretty funny, and it has a mention of Xena: Warrior Princess. Not that I feel like telling a joke, although this is a pretty darn funny joke. First time I heard it, I spit up my Yoo-Hoo. What a mess! I was wearing a really nice sweater and it was just ruined! But I got another sweater that weekend, so it all worked out OK. OK, I think that's long enough. Editor's note: Somebody shoot me.
