Extractions: Shelley and Donald Rubin '56 Shelley and Donald Rubin have been collecting Himalayan art for over 20 years. Begun as a hobby, their collecting became a passion and, as their collection grew, so did their belief that they had a responsibility to preserve and share the art they loved. Their first project was the Himalayan Art Project, a website with the mission to catalog and exhibit Himalayan art from collections around the world. www.himalayanart.org is now on its way to becoming a comprehensive and definitive archive of the art of Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and the rest of the Himalayan region. As the website took shape, the Rubin's began to plan their next project: the establishment of a Museum founded on the premise that art provides avenues and insights into the ideas, values and sensibilities of others, and, in turn, enriches the understanding of oneself and ones culture. The Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) is being constructed in New York City and will open in the spring of 2004. Its dual missions are to collect and preserve the art of the Himalayas and to contribute to the growing interest in Himalayan art and culture by providing a forum for learning about this unique region through its' vibrant artistic traditions.

Introduction The World Bank, as an international institution receiving public financial support, has long been in the spotlight of civil society organizations concerned about the environmental and social impacts of its lending activities. After decades of lending that promoted a paradigm of economic growth but paid scant attention to the environmental and social costs of Bank projects, the public has insisted that public funds not be used for projects that harm the environment or externalize development costs to the poorest members of society. In response to pressure from civil society and donor governments, the World Bank has adopted a set of binding policies governing a broad array of its activities, including mitigation of the social and environmental impacts of Bank lending. *** Top of Page 206 *** The Bank is frequently criticized for providing financial backing and an aura of legitimacy to regimes that are known to have committed serious violations of human rights or that have a reputation for corruption.

Extractions: I have suggested that all guest posters write for Living in China . Thanks. Archived entries in Human Rights Jiang Lijun is PRC's newest internet dissident We've seen before how these people aren't really "dissidents," for they are mostly just common people who write something on the internet that the PRC deems to be dangerous. Dissident, in my understanding, is someone who actually does something of a violent nature against the country, or at least, calls for the overthrow of it through violent means. So although Jiang Lijun may not fit that definition of dissident in that sense, he nonetheless has been the most outspoken to date (quoted in full): A Chinese pro-democracy activist was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday for posting articles on the internet calling for the overthrow of the Communist party, a human rights group said. Jiang Lijun, 38, was arrested last November on charges of subversion of state power. He was found guilty in January and sentenced yesterday at Beijing's No 2 intermediate people's court, according to the Hong Kong-based Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. He was one of five activists accused of subversive activities for signing an open letter calling for political reform which was posted on the internet before the Communist party's congress two years ago. The other four, He Depu, Zhao Changqing, Ouyang Yi and Dai Xuezhong have all reportedly been sentenced on subversion charges.
