Extractions: A Thanksgiving That We Should Be Thankful For Dennis Avery As my family gathers at the Thanksgiving feast this year, I am thankful that a larger percentage of the world's people than ever before enjoy food abundance. I am thankful that last winter's famine in southern Africa was no worse than it was, and that such famines are becoming increasingly rare. I am thankful for the farm science that is extending our ability to enhance both the productivity and sustainability of modern food production. At the same time, I grieve over the politically created famine in North Korea, and long for the day when the North Korean government lets American food aid reach all its hungry, not just its military establishment. I wish for freedom and abundance in places such as North Korea, Syria, Sudan, southern Africa, and Burma. Democracy and free markets, which under-gird food abundance, are thankfully spreading in the world even if fitfully and too slowly. I am grateful that the rate of wild species extinction is now as low as it has been since the 16th century. We lost only half as many known species of birds, animals and/or fish in the last third of the 20th century (20 species) as we did during the last third of the 19th century (40 species), according to the UN Environmental Program. I am startled to realize that only during the last 60 years or so has the world been able to feed all people without either hunting wild species to extinction or stealing hunting/farming land from other people.

Unlimited Motivation For Thanksgiving 14212. What does the conduct of the healed Samaritan teach us about praise and thanksgiving? What is the common thread in each of the following verses? http://www.newhope.bc.ca/99-10-10.htm
Extractions: Motivation for thanksgiving is rooted in the deliverance from desperation corner God gave us. Pastor: Eugene P. Harder * Luke 17:11-19 * Oct. 10/99 Do you know what a social ox is? Its a clumsy animal who reeks of the barnyard odour of self-centredness. It has no motivation to say thankyou. Whatever you do for it is always too little too late. Every day check-out clerks meet these oxen. One hundred items go through the scanner flawlessly with never a word of appreciation. One sale item is missed and our stinky ox bellows at the clerk for the error. The nurse gives three days of flawless care with never a thank-you. Then there is a slow response to the bell and the wrath of Hell descends upon her. The college professor gives eighteen excellent lectures with no thanks. Then comes a poor or controversial lecture and half the class storms out and wants the professor fired. Those are what I call social oxen, thank you is not in their vocabulary. Words of appreciation flow freely from hearts that are motivated by their deep need of and utter dependence upon the help of God. Proud, self-sufficient people seldom express appreciation because they always feel they deserve more than you give them.

Thanksgiving The Day of thanksgiving,. the midrash which tries to state plainly the meaning of Scripture, the pesher will often use code language and imagery to teach. http://www.grailchurch.org/thanks01.htm

It tries to see the hand of God in our lives and in the movements of history. It is different from a midrash , which is an exegetical commentary of the Biblical text. Unlike the midrash which tries to state plainly the meaning of Scripture, the pesher will often use code language and imagery to teach. Biblical typology, liturgy, and rituals are a part of pesherim. The Prophets spoke in such code language. There is a third method of instruction: the parable . Parables are stories or analogies drawn from everyday life which are used to teach, yet also conceal, an esoteric teaching. A parable usually has a moral truth which is plain to all, but it may also contain truth applicable to multiple levels of understanding. Our Lord taught in parables. This is well known. He also taught midrash which can be found in the Sermon on the Mount and in His Temptation. For instance, when He comments on the 7th Commandment (Matthew 5:27-28), He does not add anything new, but provides the correct understanding of that law. The Law also forbids covetousness, which is unlawful lust (Romans 7:7). He explains that a law is not understood properly until its spirit or intent is understood, as well. Thus, a man who covets a woman he cannot lawfully have commits adultery in his heart and breaks the law.
Extractions: This entertaining and historical story shows that the actual hero of the Thanksgiving was neither white nor Indian, but God. In 1608, English traders came to Massachusetts and captured a 12-year old Indian, Squanto, and sold him into slavery. He was raised by Christians and taught faith in God. Ten years later he was sent home to America. Upon arrival, he learned an epidemic had wiped out his entire village. But God had plans for Squanto. God delivered a Thanksgiving miracle: an English-speaking Indian living in the exact place where the Pilgrims land in a strange new world.
Extractions: Then, there is Thanksgivinga secular holiday. It is the biggest holiday that our nation, as a whole, celebrates. It has been the biggest travel day of the year, followed by the biggest shopping day of the year. While these factors, alone, can cause stress, we finally get a hiatus from the religious issues and the feelings of anxiety that stem from them. Thanksgiving is one day out of the year that we, as a family, thank God for all that he has given us. On this day we commemorate the huge feast that the Pilgrims had with their Indian friends. We might even see the hapless Detroit Lions actually win a football game. We do all of this together. It is not just "Daddy's holiday," or one that my wife and daughters have to teach me about while I'm wondering if I'm fitting in. We do not celebrate as a family of Jews and Christians. We celebrate as a family of Americans. Thanksgiving is not without its drawbacks, though. For an interfaith family, it becomes the one holiday that both sets of grandparents also celebrate. This means having to decide where to spend the day. "Do we go to my parents or your parents this year? Weren't we there last year?" You know the drill. My wife and I try to alternate years. This year it's in Ann Arbor at my parents. Next year, we will travel to Boston to be with my wife's parents.

PetParade: The Dog Daily A Dog s thanksgiving By Steve Dale for The Dog Daily No bones about it. So why do veterinarians keep warning us not to feed our dogs thanksgiving dinner? http://www.thedogdaily.com/petparade/you_dog/trythis/archive/dogs_thanksgiving/
Extractions: No bones about it. Turkey bones can get lodged in your dog's throat. Turkey or chicken bones that splinter can result in death. So you figure you'll slice the meat and offer her some without any bones. After all, what are holidays for? You love your dog. You want to share with your dog. That's good. So why do veterinarians keep warning us not to feed our dogs Thanksgiving dinner? Well, for one thing, we forget about portions. To a small dog, just three hefty slices of turkey, chicken, or ham is like you eating at least a half an entire turkey, chicken, or ham. Let's say on Thanksgiving our little Pomeranian gets a trio of those big boy slices and gets the leftovers on Friday. No wonder he doesn't feel so good by Saturday. The impact can be more severe than an upset tummy. Vets see more pancreatitis around the holidays than at any other time of the year. Eating very fatty food may cause pancreatitis, and it can be life threatening. Ham is often especially fatty (not to mention salty, and that isn't a good thing). There are lots of cases of counter surfing dogs scarfing huge hunks of meat when their owners' backs are turned, and their pancreas just can't process all that fat at once.
