Extractions: Worldwide Mountaineering Adventure Travel Index Page THAILAND ( Prathet Thai - Land of the Free ) Escaping the confines of Bangkok I headed North via the ancient capitals of Ayutthaya, Lopburi and Sukhothai to Chiang Mai - the second city of Thailand and as distinct from Bangkok as Edinburgh or Glasgow from London. Sacked, looted and razed by Burmese invaders the historic ruins of the ancient kingdom of Ayutthaya are confined in the confluence of the Pa Sak River and the Chao Phraya River some 85Km to the North of Bangkok. In a cavalcade of motorbikes I was conducted by Thai friends on an all-day, circular tour of the widely scattered monuments. From the top terrace of Phra Khao Thong ( Golden Mount Chedi ) we surveyed the flat countryside dotted everywhere with tall chedi. A line of three, giant chedis , typical of the Ayutthaya style, dominated the widespread ruins of the old Royal Temple of Wat Phra Sri Sanphet - sad but impressive relics of the once illustrious city. Chedi at Ayutthaya Sanuk - the Thai philosophy of enjoying life - prevailed that evening:- five-a-side football, dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant, drinks in a late-night bar with a Thai pop group.

Putting limitations on myself drives me to seek practical as well as creative solutions. Thai Art, 2002 Ceramic Tiles on a Core of Iron and Concrete 140 x 80 cm Courtesy of the Artist The Ban Chiang settlement in the northeastern province of Udon Thai is around 5,000 years old. It may also have been the worlds first Bronze Age Civilization. Known for its metalwork and pottery, Ban Chiang artefacts sell for hefty amounts under the auctioneers hammer today. The trouble is, Thailands ceramic arts have not progressed all that much in the millennia since. Until Surojana Sethabutra came on the scene. Her 1998 exhibition, Israel , for instance, grew out of a month-long trip to the Middle East. Thats when she became fascinated by Israels irrigation system. For the main installation, which occupied the whole gallery floor, Surojana put her architectural training to good use by dividing the space into four areas - Agriculture Religion Military , and National parks, Antiquities and Monuments

"What is history but a fable agreed upon?" ~ Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) Thailand has a well preserved archeological record dating back to pre iron age nomadic hunter and gatherers. There is archeological record to document that the worlds first bronze age culture, as well as the worlds first rice farmer, was in Issan of eastern Thailand. Pottery shards bearing the imprint of both grains and husks of rice were discovered at Non Nok Tha near Korat dating from at least 4000 B.C. The world's first domestic cultivation of rice was in Issan near today's Korat.

Conclusion In their search for identity, the village-dwelling Isan people of rural Northeast Thailand despite long-standing exploitation, cultural barriers and hindrances placed in their way by the more urbane and class-conscious Central Thai have over the last several decades taken initiative and seized the opportunity to advance themselves and their resultant rank in mainstream Thai society. This is evidenced by their emerging acceptance and significance on a national level in both socio-economic and political terms as they evolve from their agrarian upbringings into becoming the formally-recognized labor class of Thailand. Thailand, of Anna and the King of Siam fame, means Land of the Free It is ruled by a benevolent monarchy, and a localized form of constitutional, parliamentary-styled representative democracy since 1932.
