Residents of the district, 18 years of age or older, who have resided in Texas for at least 12 months and in the district for at least six months and are registered voters, may serve on the Board. In 1959, when the Missouri City and Sugar Land school districts consolidated to form Fort Bend ISD, the Board of Trustees was set up with seven positions three from the former Missouri City district, three from the former Sugar Land district, and one at-large position. Does this mean that Board members represent only their community, and not the district at-large? No. Each Board member serves every resident of Fort Bend ISD, no matter where they reside, and all Fort Bend ISD residents vote for all positions on the Board. How long are Board of Trustees terms? Trustees are elected to three-year terms on a rotating basis. Two are elected each year, one from each side of the district. Every third year, the at-large position is elected. Do Board members receive financial compensation for their time?

Schools and school districts must consider every citizen, parent, teacher, local business, economic development organization, nonprofit organization and retiree as a valuable resource and try to involve them in district activities and decision making. School districts typically communicate with their stakeholders through publications, community forums, local and area media, board meetings, special events, community access television and Web sites. Communities with excellent school systems attract new businesses, homebuyers and taxpayers. Effective community involvement efforts can enhance the quality of educational programs and exponentially expand the resources of a school district. BACKGROUND RISD is a fast growing district located 30 miles northeast of Dallas. The district grew 28.9 percent from 1998-99 to 2002-03. Student demographics shifted during this period increasing the Anglo student population by 22.4 percent and the minority student population significantly more. Extractions: Email this article By Vanessa Parks With a moon bounce, three-legged races, and popcorn machines, most PTO volunteers see a carnival as a festive way to boost school spirit, raise some money, and, of course, have a little fun. But from where Elgin Allen sits, that same carnival looks more like a little shop of horrors. The moon bounce? A chance for someone to get hurt, perhaps seriously. Ditto the three-legged race. The popcorn machine? A fire hazard. Typically if people file a lawsuit, theyll name anyone as defendants, says Allen. Even if the parent group itself doesnt have much money to go after, the officers may be named. What are the attorneys going to do? Theyre going to look for the deep pockets and go after personal assets, he says. Many volunteers seem to take a head-in-the-sand approach to lawsuits, thinking, Well, Im a volunteer so I cant be sued or Were just a simple parent group. Who would embezzle from us? The trouble is that anyone can be sued and parent groups across the country have been victims of theft more times than we care to remember. Lawsuits require attorneys (at $200 per hour). And missing funds can be terribly difficult to replace.

Q: What are some of the Council's successful strategies? Q: What evidence supports the success or effectiveness of the Council? Q: What is PTA? A: PTA - the acronym for "Parent Teacher Association ® ," is a state and national affiliated organization that is dedicated to advocacy for all children. The National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer association in the United States working exclusively on behalf of children and youth. Each individual school PTA is linked to a vast network of resources including other PTA units as well as state and national organizations. When mobilized, this network of child advocates numbers over 7 million, influencing both state and national legislation as well as advocating the role of parents in their children's education. The work of PTA is based on the concept that many groups with similar goals working for children are much more effective and benefit more children than a single organization working alone on one school campus. PTAs are governed and guided by bylaws of the unit that correspond with Texas PTA bylaws. All local units and councils are assisted by one of the 18 district presidents and the Texas PTA Board of Directors. A paid 15-member staff at the Texas PTA Office in Austin supports the work of the organization.
