Extractions: FOOD SERVICES This chapter of the report describes the Food Services department operations of the Eagle Pass Independent School District (EPISD) in the following areas: B. NUTRITION EDUCATION The American Dietetic Association, the Society for Nutrition Education and the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) have developed a position statement outlining the need for comprehensive school-based nutrition programs and services for all the nation's elementary and secondary students. It is important to evaluate the role that school meals play in helping students learn more effectively while improving their immediate and future health. Research has shown that school food and nutrition programs are important to both learning readiness and good health . Childhood obesity has become the third most prevalent disease of children and adolescents in the United States. Many large districts view school meals as an integral part of the total education process and allocate money to ensure quality and maintain affordability. Policy decisions are increasingly made to provide all students the skills and environment they need to adopt healthy eating and dietary behaviors. The School Meals Initiative mandates that EPISD meet the nutrient standards established by the USDA for fat and energy (caloric) content.

Lucio, however, had mixed feelings on the bills passage. Passage of Senate Bill 474 is a bittersweet victory, Lucio said. I am disappointed that legislation to restrict foods and beverages of no nutritional value in our schools was thwarted by those who should be foremost in supporting this endeavor. On the other hand, I look forward to meeting with all stakeholders on this issue with the goal of improving the nutritional quality and standards of public school foods and beverages. The interim committee will look at all aspects of foods and beverages provided to children in our public schoolsthe national school food program, a la carte foods, competitive foods, and vending machineswith the goal of combating childhood obesity and its related diseases. Benefits of a universal breakfast and lunch program, as well as contracts on competitive foods and vending machines and revenues generated and accountability of these revenues, will also be studied. I am pleased that the Texas Legislature has agreed to conduct an interim study to address childhood obesity and school nutrition, said Representative Jaime Capelo (D-Corpus Christi). This study will bring much-needed awareness to our parents and public schools. The health of our children directly impacts the future of
