The Texas City Disaster April 16, 1947 The morning of 16 April 1947 dawned clear and crisp, cooled by a brisk north wind. Just before 8:00 A.M., longshoremen removed the hatch covers on Hold 4 of the French Liberty ship Grandcamp as they prepared to load the remainder of a consignment of ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Some 2,300 tons were already onboard, 880 of which were in the lower part of Hold 4. The remainder of the ship's cargo consisted of large balls of sisal twine, peanuts, drilling equipment, tobacco, cotton, and a few cases of small ammunition. No special safety precautions were in focus at the time. Several longshoremen descended into the hold and waited for the first pallets holding the 100-pound packages to be hoisted from dockside. Soon thereafter, someone smelled smoke. A plume was observed rising between the cargo holds and the ships hull, apparently about seven or eight layers of sacks down. Neither a gallon jug of drinking water nor the contents of two fire extinguishers supplied by crew members seemed to do much good. As the fire continued to grow, someone lowered a fire hose, but the water was not turned on. Since the area was filling fast with smoke, the longshoremen were ordered out of the hold.

Houston Chronicle TEXAS CITY - On the morning of April 16, 1947, shortly after 8 a.m., the hatch on the No. 4 hold of the French ship the S.S. Grandcamp was opened so that stevedores could resume loading a shipment of fertilizer bound for Europe. It was the beginning of a beautiful, cool day, a breeze was coming out of the north, and Texas City was at work again. Much of the rest of the country, still in the grip of a postwar recession, couldn't say that, but Texas City was different. Along the waterfront, there was plenty of work for the town's longshoremen, and next to the wharf stood a hissing, steaming landscape of chemical plants and oil refineries that provided steady, good-paying jobs for much of the town.

Texas :: Texas City Preserve The texas City Prairie Preserve features rare coastal prairie habitat and is one of the last remaining sites that support wild Attwater s prairie chickens. http://nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/texas/preserves/texascity.html
Extractions: The Texas City Preserve features rare coastal prairie habitat and is one of the last remaining sites that supports wild Attwater's prairie chickens. At the turn of the century, there were approximately 1 million Attwater's prairie chickens along the Texas coast. However, loss of coastal prairie habitat over the years devastated the population, and less than 50 remain in the wild today, making the bird one of the most endangered in North America. The recovery program for the Attwater's prairie chicken has included the introduction of captive-bred juvenile birds into the wild at the preserve each summer since 1996. The birds are monitored and a survey of their numbers is taken every spring. Restoration of the coastal prairie is a primary stewardship activity on the preserve. Cattle grazing, which has occurred on the prairie since the late 1800s, continues to provide a substitute for the wandering herds of bison that are no longer present.

Extractions: by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1138. Today's story is about cigarettes and fertilizer. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. O n April 19, 1995, some murderers parked a U-Haul truck filled with only slightly modified ammonium nitrate fertilizer in front of an Oklahoma City office building. They ignited it, killed 168 people, and injured 600 more. That was 48 years and two days after a far larger charge of the same material had gone off accidentally here in Texas. Hugh Stephens tells how, on April 16th, 1947, two Liberty ships docked at Texas City on the Houston ship channel the Grandcamp and the High Flyer . Both were loading cargoes of that same fertilizer. The Grandcamp held 2300 tons the High Flyer , 1000 tons. The rest of High Flyer 's cargo was sulfur. At 8:00 that morning, a small fire broke out in one of the
