Hutchison Capitol Comment - A Silent Killer One texas mother, Carolyn Waghorne of Dallas, contacted me after the tragic death of her son, Carter, who contracted meningitis at boarding school in 1998. http://hutchison.senate.gov/ccmeningitis.htm
Extractions: A SILENT KILLER Last fall, Lydia Evans entered her sophomore year at North Texas University as a healthy 20-year-old. Now she's lost both of her legs, parts of seven of her fingers and has endured 15 surgeries and intense physical therapy. She is a victim of a terrible, yet little-known disease called meningococcal meningitis. Nearly 3,000 Americans contract meningitis each year. It is a serious illness that can result in deafness, blindness, amputations, permanent brain damage and even death. Approximately 10 to 13 percent of Americans afflicted die despite receiving antibiotics immediately after diagnosis. Last year 198 Texans became ill with this disease. Seventeen died. Warning Signs The bacteria that cause meningitis can be found in the noses and throats of many people who never become sick. In isolated cases, however, the bacteria can travel to a person's blood, brain or spinal cord, causing an infection that leads to the illness. The bacteria is spread through sneezing or coughing directly in someone's face, kissing, sharing eating and drinking utensils, or any exposure to another person's saliva. Severe symptoms can appear suddenly in a matter of hours, or may begin with flu-like symptoms. Abrupt onset of high fever, severe and persistent headaches, a stiff neck, nausea or vomiting requires prompt medical attention. Also, dramatic behavioral changes such as disorientation, sleepiness and difficulty waking may be later warning signs. Who's at Risk?

At their wit's end, they decided to send her to a boarding school. Nobody foresaw the tribulations to come, when Catharine was hauled from her North Texas home 1,050 miles away to the rocky country of rural southwest Utah - nine months of what she and her family now consider hard time in a hard place. Catherine was sent to a boarding school run by an organization that had another school closed down treated as appropriate discipline for a troubled teen-ager. This is Catherine's side of the story: It was the day before her 16th birthday. Catherine, now 17 and married, said she was handcuffed by "escorts" in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen in Henrietta, Texas, where she had been dropped off by her stepfather.

The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.

Extractions: By Matt Flores He came from a modest home in Lufkin, scraped his way through college, then struck it rich in the oil and gas industry. In the years leading up to his death in 2003, Dallas businessman John Jackson wanted to give something back to higher education. In a span of just 12 months, the estate of Jackson and his late wife, Katie, doled out nearly $245 million to the University of Texas at Austin and Texas Lutheran University. " Both of them believed education was the key to everything, and John wanted his fortune to go to higher education," said James Langham, a longtime friend of the couple and executor of their estate. " He could see that someone could start with very little, and that with the proper education and hard work, could be successful." The Jacksons' gifts were a culmination of longtime relationships with both universities. Jackson attended UT, and his wife was on the board of trustees at TLU for two decades. During their lives, they gave roughly $50 million to the two institutions. UT's geology school is named for the couple; an auditorium at TLU also bears their name.

Extractions: St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital For high school senior Janet Guo, volunteering at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital during the summers gives her a chance "to make a difference in people's lives." One day recently, she noticed a family in distress about a loved one's medical condition. "We had a team of people talking to them," she says. "We were able to console them and keep them abreast of what was going on. When people understand procedures, it makes it much easier for them." Janet started volunteering three years ago at St. Luke's when her father, Bujin Guo, was a researcher at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's. "I think it has really enriched her life to help people," says Mr. Guo, who now works as a scientist with a Houston company. Pam Lemp, director of volunteer services at St. Luke's, loves having students like Janet as members of the Junior Volunteer Program. "They have a tremendous amount of energy and their idealism is infectious," she says. Janet, who isn't sure if she'll follow in her father's footsteps and become a scientist, heads back to boarding school in North Carolina soon. She won't forget her summer at St. Luke's. "It just makes me feel so good to help people through tough times," she says.

I am listing various topics that will be included at the elementary level, middle level, and high level. We already have lots of the usual materials on many of the topics. But we wanted to offer you the opportunity to add - if you happened to have articles, photos, sketches, etc that could add to the topics. If we use your materials, we will listed you as a contributor. If you happened to see a topic(s) that should be included and we have overlooked it, please give us the opportunity to consider it. OFF TO BOARDING-SCHOOL SOMETHING unusual was happening at Locust, Although it was early in September, and the heat and dust-of a Kentucky summer still lingered in every corner of Lloydsboro Valley, the great house with its vine-covered pillars was being hastily put in order for winter closing. Rob Moore, swinging his tennis racket as he sauntered down the avenue under the arching locust-trees, stopped short with a whistle of surprise. The tennis net was down. He had come at the Little Colonel's invitation for a farewell game, as they were both to start to school on the morrow, she in the Valley, and he in town. He could not understand the sudden removal of the net. Then he noticed that every hammock and garden chair had disappeared from the lawn. Not even the usual trail of magazines and palm-leaf fans was left on the grass, to show that somebody had been spending a comfortable hour in the shade. Usually at this time in the afternoon there was a flutter of ribbons and white dresses somewhere back among the trees; but the place was deserted now. The wicker tea-table was gone from its corner on the piazza. The rugs and cushions which had filled the cosy corners behind the vines were packed away. The lace curtains were down in the long drawing room and, peering through the windows which opened to the floor, he saw a coloured man, busily shrouding the handsome old furniture in linen covers.
