I remember when I first opened a PC to upgrade memory. This was back when memory chips had legs on them and came in tubes. Replacing these things was not easy because the little legs were so easy to bend and even break. The chips weren't cheap, and my palms were drenched in nervous sweat. It all worked though, and over the years I've become much more sanguine about hardware in general. There's nothing I'm really afraid to tackle, though there are things I'd just rather not do, either because the procedures are tricky or just more difficult than I'd like. I don't like replacing motherboards, and I don't like replacing almost anything on those very small desktop units where you have to take out floppy drives and cd's just to get at memory. I CAN do those things, but I try hard not to. There's an awful lot about hardware I just don't know though, and that's why I found this book useful and enlightening. It covers everything, from motherboard chipsets to cases and external UPS's. There's good, accurate, explanations of how things work, comparisons of competing technologies, and very good trouble-shooting sections. Configuration and troubleshooting for both Windows and Linux is provided. I learned more than I thought I would, and would unhesitantly recommend this to anyone building their own PC or anyone who has to do occasional hardware troubleshooting/repair.

Yet, it is also true that the market for these devices, both new and used, is still pretty strong, because there still are many hundreds of thousands still being used, and many of them probably will continue to be used for years to come. And why not? If the application being used doesn't need anything more than a dumb terminal, why have the expense and complication of a PC? Dumb terninals are simple, have no moving parts, are relatively rugged, easy to diagnose (usually it's broken or it isn't), and easy to replace when needed. So you are apt to find these still kicking about here and there. For those of us who started out when these were completely ubiquitous, dumb terminals create no fear and are not particularly challenging. But there is a whole new breed of consultant out there, young folks who don't have the advantage of having cut their teeth on these critters, and I have noticed that some of them find our comfortable old green screens a little confusing and maybe a little intimidating.

Extractions: Thin clients are generally considered to be diskless workstations connected to a network. Windows-based terminals, on the other hand, enjoy the clearest defining characteristics of all the sub-classes of thin clients. To be a Windows-based terminal, the device must be able to display Windows applications running on a server, using either the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or Citrix Systems Inc.'s Independent Computing Architecture (ICA). NCs incorporate a browser and the Java Virtual Machine. The more important distinction, however, is that NCs typically download data and applications and process them locally. The Windows-based terminal passes keyboard and mouse input one way and displays information the other, with all processing taking place on the server. NetPCs are a catchall category for stripped-down PCs, typically with tamper-proofed chassis, that might employ local or remote processing, depending on the operating environment. As a follow-up to our recent review of Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, we obtained samples of five Windows-based terminals to see how the hardware side of this operating protocol was being brought to market. All of our test terminals are very new creations: A sixth possible participant, the Visara from Affinity Systems (Lansdale, Pa., www.affinitysystems.com), missed our testing deadline due to unexpected delays in its certification process. A definite variety exists in the offerings, although in operation they are, as could be expected, virtual clones of each other.
