Extractions: 1896 Athens 1900 Paris 1904 St. Louis 1908 London ... 2004 Athens Antwerp saw the birth of the famous Olympic flag of five interlocking circles, representing the unity and friendship of the human race. It also saw a repeat of the first Olympiad, when doves were released to symbolise peace between the nations. Finland usurped the American dominance on the track thanks to Koiehmainen and the legendary Paavo Nurmi who won three medals, two gold and one silver, at the start of his illustrious Olympic career. South America claimed their first gold medal in 1920 when Guilherme Paraense of Brazil won the rapid-fire pistol event, whilst Willie Lee and Lloyd Spooner of America celebrated four and five golds respectively. Elsewhere, American diver Aileen Riggin became the youngest gold medal winner at just 14 years and 119 days. Great Britain's Philip Noel-Baker won silver in the 1500m, and later went on to become an MP. In 1959, he became the only Olympian to ever be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In a performance unequaled in Olympic history, Nedo Nadi of Italy earned gold medals in five of the six fencing events. Ethelda Bleibtrey of the United States won gold medals in all three womens swimming contests. Including preliminary heats, she swam in five races and broke the world record in every one. Frances Suzanne Lenglen dominated womens tennis singles so completely that she lost only four games in the ten sets she played. At age 72, Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn earned a silver medal in the team double-shot running deer event to become the oldest medalist ever. The 1920 12-foot dinghy sailing event was the only event in Olympic history to be held in two countries. The first race was staged in Belgium, but the last two races took place in the Netherlands because both entrants were Dutch.

Jewish merchants sold new and used clothes there as well as all manner of utility goods. Narinkka was closed down in 1929. The Coach Station building formerly served as the mess kitchen of the Turku garrisons and kept the Russian soldiers fed. The Coach Station was opened in the building in 1935. It gradually became dilapidated but was finally reconditioned, preserving its former appearance. There are two types of Olympics, the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. Through 1992 they were held in the same year, but beginning in 1994 they were rescheduled so that they are held in alternate even-numbered years. For example, the Winter Olympics were held in 1994 and the Summer Olympics in 1996. The Winter Olympics were next held in 1998, and the Summer Olympics next occurred in 2000.

Extractions: Women In The Olympic Games In the Ancient Olympic Games, women were forbidden to take part. In fact, they were forbidden to even enter the competition areas as spectators. If they were caught, the punishment was death. Therefore, they created their own games dedicated to the goddess Hera. Hera was the sister-wife of Zeus. The Olympic Games were dedicated to Zeus. In London at the 1908 Games there were 36 women competitors in the figure skating and tennis events. After these Games and a recommendation from the British Olympic Association that women swimmers, divers and gymnasts be allowed to compete in future Games, the Swedish Organising Committee included two swimming events and one diving contest for women at the 1912 Stockholm Games. Finally, in 1924 the IOC decided to allow a large participation of women in the Games. However, there was little evidence of this even by the 1936 Games in Berlin where there were only four sports available to women.

The Flame signified purity, reason and peace among nations. A temporary truce between fighting cities was in place during the games as warriors traded their armor for athletics.

For Australia, this years Olympic Games demonstrate the nations success as measured on several levels. One of only three nations to compete in all 25 modern Olympic Games, Australia now is host to this event on the cusp of a new millennium, winning the honor against fierce international competition. When Sydney won its bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games in 1993, a high-stakes match of competitive bidding among architects, engineers, and contractors worldwide was set into motion, every bit as dramatic as the sporting events that would happen seven years later. More than 30 sporting venues were required for competition in September, but the venues were only a fraction of the total infrastructure needed for the Olympics. Behind the scenes, an enormous network of engineering, design and planning unfolded. Gold Medal Contender One company in particular proved itself a top competitor during Sydneys Olympic design and construction period. The respected architectural firm Bligh Voller Nield (BVN) has compiled a wide range of world-class projects throughout Australia and the Pacific Rim. The firm began when three prominent Australian firms merged: Bligh Voller Architects, Lawrence Nield and Partners Australia and Grose Bradley. The result is a powerful collaboration of design talent.

Story Tools BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters) World No. 2 Kim Clijsters will not play tennis for Belgium at next summer's Olympic Games after a wrangle over sponsored clothing. The 20-year-old said she will "remain fair" to her own backer Italian manufacturer Fila rather than wear rival Adidas' official Belgian uniform in Athens. "As long as my clothing remains an issue, it is impossible for me to go to the Olympics," Clijsters has said. She confirmed her decision on Monday. "I've decided not to go to the Olympic Games," Clijsters said in a diary on her official Web site. "I want to remain fair to the people I made a contract with. They were the only ones who wanted me two years ago." Clijsters wished her compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne already sponsored by Adidas luck at the Olympics. "I really hope Justine takes the gold in Athens and hopefully the other Belgians take plenty of medals as well," she said. "I'll be their number one supporter."
