Search 20th Century History According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles (the Roman Hercules), a son of Zeus. Yet the first Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BCE (though it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years already). At this Olympic Games, a naked runner, Coroebus (a cook from Elis), won the sole event at the Olympics, the stade - a run of approximately 192 meters (210 yards). This made Coroebus the very first Olympic champion in history. The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor Theodosius I , a Christian, abolished the Games because of their pagan influences.

Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Tennis formed part of the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896 and lasted until the 1924 Games in Paris. The trend for players to turn professional, a clash of dates with Wimbledon and arguments about the rulebook saw the sport drop out of the Games until 1984, when demonstration matches were played in Los Angeles. Tennis returned to the Olympic fold as an official sport in 1988, when professional players were allowed to take part. As such, the likes of Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver never had a chance to become Olympic champions, while the likes of Martina Navratilova were ruled ineligible by her own US federation because she did not wish to compete in the Federation Cup. Between 1896 and 1924, British players won 16 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze medals and, as such, will remain at the top of the historic tennis medal table for at least a couple more Games to come despite Britain's lowly rating in world tennis.

Once the British had set up the rules and led the way for the world, scoring many an early triumph along the way, they then, in time-honoured tradition, slipped down the league of sporting excellence. Take away the racket, hit what passes for a ball with the palm of the hand and you have the game of tennis as played by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Arabs and Persians. The French took up a similar game and called it Tenez, or "take it", in the 9th and 10th centuries, after it had become popular among members of the Royal Household. The early game had indoor and outdoor versions and involved hitting a cloth bag with the palm across a mound of dirt or a rope. This led to the use of the term

It is part of the main complex, situated nine kilometres north of Athens city centre, which is also the site of the Olympic stadium. The Centre Court also houses the players' lounge and locker rooms, media centre, tournament control and technology. There are 16 courts in total, with Centre Court capacity of 8,000 and two show courts holding 7,000 each. Another seven courts each have a seating capacity of 200 and the surface throughout is Decoturf II - the same as the US Open. The first formal matches held at the new complex were a men's futures and women's circuit event in March.
