As part of the university abroad program, a student teacher from New York met other aspiring teachers from the Midwest in a language immersion program in France. Part of the program included setting up electronic means for participants to support one another after their experience in France. To create opportunities for mutual support, the student teachers and master teachers collaborated online to find Web sites that evaluated texts, offered virtual tours, provided opportunities for links between their students and French students, and offered forums for discussing issues related to professional practice. Extractions: Last July, Louisiana Governor Mike Foster, a Republican, signed a $2.65 million line item in the state budget that authorized significant new funds for school-based health centers. This would not be so unusual unless one takes into account that, only a few years before, Las Vegas odds makers would have cast the probability of this outcome as something approximating the cancellation of Mardi Gras. What happened over time in Louisiana was due, in large measure, to superb public relations work, and it's symptomatic of a trend that has seen school-based health centers grow from 350 nationally in 1992 to nearly 900 this year. School-based healthcare that addresses a wide range of health problems traces its origins to the early 70s when medical visionaries in Boston, St. Paul and Dallas independently recognized that bringing healthcare to children in schools could overcome barriers to needed care. For many children, health problems - from sports injuries to depression, from asthma to substance abuse -stood a much better chance of being prevented and treated in schoo ls than in traditional medical settings. After all, emergency rooms weren't designed to solve basic health problems, and for children who lacked a regular source of care, a doctor's office or a community clinic was either unaffordable or located away from home or school. In the latter case, getting care was difficult for working parents and others who rarely have hours available to arrange appointments, travel to the health provider, and return home hours later.

Extractions: Recital Database The Media Center is the service site in the Fine Arts Library for sound recordings and videos. The collection, currently at over 18,000 items, contains western art music, jazz, folk and ethnic music that supports the School of Music curriculum. The Media Center is also the only place where the recorded concerts of School of Music faculty, student, and ensembles are archived and accessible. Services include providing recorded music to School of Music faculty for teaching and research purposes as well as reserves for student assignments and exam preparation. The collection is considered reference material and, therefore, does not circulate. However, anyone from the University community and the general public is welcome to come and use the facilities on site. Some past clients have included the UK hospital; Hospice of the Bluegrass; UK Office of Public Information; public school educators in Kentucky and Tennessee; The Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra; UK community Colleges; and local television and radio stations. A new audio/visual system specifically designed to meet the needs of the Little Fine Arts Library was recently installed. This system includes 49 listening/study carrels each equipped with a mini-disc recorder, headphone amplifier, and a remote control keypad. A source console containing all the playback equipment connected to a switching matrix and controlling software provides the necessary routing of the a/v signals to any or all of the listening/viewing carrels. The remote keypad in each carrel is used by patrons to control the source to which they are listening. This new system should provide for all the audio-visual needs of the library while preserving the physical condition of the collection.

Extractions: by Barbara I. Dewey, Dean of Libraries, University of Tennessee How can we provide access to several hundred songs to 1,300 students who enroll annually in the History of Rock course? This was the initial question to be answered by the University of Tennessee (UT). The answer ended up to be two workable models and accompanying collaborative spaces for production and creation of digital media content for the campusthe Digital Media Service and the Studio. Formulating the answer required close partnerships between the library, the Office of Information Technology, and faculty from across the campus. As early as 1999, UT librarians and technologists began collaborating on pilot projects to evaluate both the feasibility and suitability of delivering multimedia content in the form of course reserves over the Internet. As with all large research universities, the ability to scale efforts to high-enrollment classes was essential. Fortunately several realities were in place to ensure progress: A track record existed among technologists, librarians, and faculty in digitizing print and audio in partnership.

Extractions: From free! The Freedom Forum Online, 4/29/99 By Phillip Taylor, First Amendment Center NASHVILLE, Tenn. - First Amendment advocates and a psychologist last night warned participants in a town hall meeting about the shootings in Littleton, Colo., that blaming the Internet and the entertainment industry creates scapegoats and avoids solutions. "I don't believe the answer is vested in blaming any one group," said Harold Jordan, a psychologist at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. "I think the answer is vested in parents and children and schools solving problems." But students, teachers, parents and community members invited to the taping of "Target: America's Schools" for a local television station mostly avoided blame, preferring instead to search for ways to prevent such violence. Few offered explanations for the April 20 shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, which left 15 dead. But many offered possible solutions, ranging from more parental involvement to boosting school counseling to encouraging more prayer in school. The Freedom Forum's First Amendment Center sponsored the town hall meeting in its forum along with WKRN/Channel 2, Nashville's ABC affiliate. WKRN plans to air the hourlong program at 7 CDT tonight, while free! is set to Webcast it at noon tomorrow.
