Interns conform to the schedule of their placement rather than the university calendar. They immerse themselves in the life of the school and work alongside experienced, successful mentor teachers. As the interns gain experience and increased competence, they become "extra" teachers and are able to "give back" to the school through their extended time and service. Tennessee Valley Professional Development Consortium coordinates the activities of the College's 13 Professional Development Schools. PDS is a partnership effort between the College and an individual school to improve the preparation and induction of novice teachers. University and school-based faculty teach interns at the PDS site and also participate in joint professional development activities with school personnel. The Consortium is led by a steering committee composed of classroom teachers, principals, and college faculty.
