Rural School Funding Report - Volume 2, Issue 15 (8/18/03) The state s new k12 education budget includes a million in college scholarships for tennessee high school KENTUCKY schools BATTLE THE URGE TO MERGE Kentucky s http://www.ruraledu.org/issues/finance/news215.htm
Extractions: In response to a recent state Supreme Court ruling, teachers in rural Tennessee will see pay raises this year at the same time that the overall K-12 education budget enjoys a slight increase. The new pay raises come after the court found that teachers in poor rural areas were paid less than teachers in other areas of the state. The court ordered the state to provide equity in teacher salaries. Tennessee's governor has also created a special task force to investigate and advise on ensuring equity in teacher salaries across the state. The state's new K-12 education budget includes a four percent increase over last year's budget. In order to make ends meet, the state has borrowed from its reserve funds and tobacco settlement funds. In addition, higher education has been cut by nine percent and legislators are hoping that revenues from a new state lottery will help provide approximately $175 million in college scholarships for Tennessee high school graduates.
Tennessee: Why Rural Matters Walden s Ridge Cluster Three Morgan County tennessee schools have tapped artistic Rural Teachers Get Pay Raises; Aug 03 tennessee k-12 Education Budget Avoids http://www.ruraledu.org/states/tn.htm
Extractions: With two million rural people totaling more than one-third of the population, rural Tennessee hosts one-third of the states schools and one-quarter of its students. Those schools get as much money as possible into the classroom, spending sparingly on school administration and transportation. But on average they are fairly big, make less use of classroom computers than rural schools elsewhere, and have low teachers salaries, compared to other states or elsewhere in Tennessee. These factors make rural education very important, and the need for policy attention critical. From Why Rural Matters 2003: The Continuing Need for Every State to Take Action on Rural Education, February 2003. Learn more about why rural matters in your state. Three Morgan County Tennessee schools have tapped artistic, historic, and environmental resources both inside and outside of the classroom. From the beginning, high school students themselves have been assuming responsibility for curricular planning sessions, designing and building facilities, organizing local history projects, creating guides for their own nature trails, and working with civic groups to conserve local landmarks.

K-12 Networking - State Of Tennessee Each of tennessee s k12 public schools will have access to this electronic highway and exposure to a world of knowledge and learning opportunities. http://www.nctp.com/TN.html

The following message concerns K-12 networking in the State of Tennessee. Forwarding or cross-posting of this message is welcomed, provided the content is left intact. This does not represent an official statement by the State of Tennessee, and any errors or omissions are my own. I must acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the COSNDISC participants and other state Education officials in our planning process in Tennessee: we've sought the benefit of others' experience in K-12 networking and you have been most helpful to us. The Tennessee State Department of Education presented its recommendations for the Tennessee Education Network (TEN) and 21st Century Classroom initiatives to the State's Information Systems Council (ISC) on December 16, 1993. Part of that presentation was the recommended TEN telecommunications approach. That segment of the presentation is reproduced in outline form below. The ISC gave their support to this approach, and Tennessee will be implementing the TEN - including Internet access to every school - in 1994.

Government agencies (Federal and State), corporations and private foundations fund projects in school districts and schools to solve problems and/or to try out new programs. Finding and competing for those funds will take time and hard work, but success will help you enrich your school programs through unique school-wide or classroom projects and professional development for teachers and administrators. This web page will get you started by telling you where to look, giving you tips on writing successful grants and, if you are a Tennessee public school or school district, telling you how to arrange for free grant-writing workshops. Extractions: Disadvantaged Kentucky and Tennessee Schools Graduate to High-Speed Cabling When you think of Kentucky and Tennessee, coal mining, cotton fields, catfish and rural farm areas probably come to mind; not high-speed, high-bandwidth cabling. However, through government grants, elementary and high school students in certain low-income areas of Kentucky and Tennessee are now benefiting from receiving the most advanced voice, video and data networking systems - from wireless backbones to the latest ratified Category (CAT) 6 connectivity. Spending Funds Wisely The Schools and Libraries Corp. is a newly formed nonprofit organization established by the Federal Communications Commission to administer the E-Rate program. All K-12 schools and public libraries qualify for the program and receive discounts according to their level of economic disadvantage, which is determined by the annual percentage of students eligible for the National School Lunch Program. "To spend these funds wisely, we have tried to standardize the components of the cabling infrastructure to make it easier for the schools to determine the percentages allotted for hardware and installation costs," says Gomer. "By providing a 25-year warranted system from NetClear, a Berk-Tek/Ortronics alliance, such as NetClearGT2 or NetClearGT3, end-to-end high-performance cabling solutions consisting of a fiber-optic backbone and CAT 6 horizontal copper cabling, we were able to standardize the structured cabling system for the LAN within the school districts. This made it much more conducive than just installing a couple of modems and computers," says Allen.
Extractions: K-12 Search Engine Enriches the Teaching and Learning Process of Memphis City Schools Allowing students direct access to the Internet for school projects can equal disaster. Not only will they probably not stay on task, they may also access inappropriate content such as pornography. For teachers, finding enough time in their day to search for Web sites that are relevant and appropriate for education is a real issue. Add the task of finding online resources that support their state's academic standards and the feat seems nearly impossible. Memphis City Schools in Tennessee is the 21st largest school system in the nation with more than 118,000 students in 185 schools. The district recently began searching for an affordable tool that would help make the Internet a more effective resource for its teachers and students. Diane Raley, instructional technology coordinator for Memphis City Schools, first saw a demonstration of netTrekker last year and was impressed with the quality of its 180,000 educator-selected Web sites. She was also impressed that netTrekker provided a search engine specifically designed for school use. Noticing how simple netTrekker was to use and that the product also aligned Web resources to Tennessee's curriculum standards, Raley knew this was a technology tool that would enhance teaching and learning for all of the district's teachers and students. Not only does netTrekker help alleviate the problem of Internet safety and student use, but it also serves as a valuable resource that enables teachers to integrate technology and the state's curriculum standards into their daily curricula.
