Extractions: Text and photographs by Dan Hardison Sitting on Main Street in the heart of this small Tennessee town, historic Grace Episcopal Church has long been a symbol of fine craftsmanship and Southern charm. One of its best-known features is an altar rail carved from solid walnut by a local schoolteacher. So what better place for this beautiful carving than in a church of " Carpenter Gothic " architecture. Built in 1877 on land that was once the formal garden for a large antebellum home, Grace Church is a beautiful example of the Carpenter Gothic style characterized by the use of sawn wood details that traditionally would have been created in stone. The Gothic style originated in Europe where wood is scarce, but here in this country the style could be executed in wood with a charm all its own. This craftsmanship in wood was carried through to the inside of Grace Church with its interior of walnut and the carved Altar and altar rail. the words "

Extractions: - The historical perception of off-reservation boarding schools as institutions of cultural genocide conflicts with the strong support for the remaining residential schools from the Indian communities they serve. Reconciling the supposed contradictions requires close examination of the changes that have occurred in the goals and philosophies of these schools. My research examines these changes in two off-reservation boarding schools still in operation, Santa Fe Indian School, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Chemawa Indian School, Salem, Oregon. Michele Murphy , Amherst College - With the legalization of the US dollar in 1993, and increases in the flow of currency into Cuba from migration and tourism, the Cuban economy and society have both seen widening divisions between the dollar sector and the peso sector. The dollar has not only created a difference between the rich and the poor but has also created increased separation along racial and regional lines. Along with the influx of American dollars has been an influx of US cultural and material ideas as well, which I see as the first step towards the propagation of US cultural values in Cuban society. Extractions: Hello, My name is John Caruso. I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the early 1970's Chattanooga used to be the dirtiest city in the country. Things have changed a lot since then. Not only has Chattanooga cleaned up its act, but it is now a beautiful place to live. Chattanooga is really living up to its nick-name as the " Scenic City of the South. " I'm proud to say I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee! Two of the biggest are Lookout Mountain and the Chickamauga Battlefield ( in North Georgia just across the state line). Lookout Mountain features Rock City Gardens Point Park and Ruby Falls Rock City has been advertised for hundreds of miles around by painting the roofs of barns with the words, "See Rock City". Although Rock City boasts you can see seven states the typical visitor's view is pretty much limited to just four: Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The others, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, just get lost in the haze. Nevertheless, on a clear day you can see pretty far. The Incline Railway goes almost straight up the side of Lookout mountain. It is a steep ride and you will have to hang on.

The 16-yr-old student from Boca Raton, FL, also had been beaten in the face- possibly with both a club and brick, said Wayne County Prosecutor Jon A. Kiser, who declined to discuss a motive. On Tuesday, an 18-yr-old student from Bentonville, AR, Anthony Gene Rutherford, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Two 15-yr-old boys from California were held for a hearing to decide whether to charge them as adults. Kiser said Deputies arrested the three suspects, who surrendered shortly after the body was discovered. Police say they found a pocketknife, a piece of firewood and a brick near the body. Rutherford was being held without bail in the Wayne County Jail in Greenville, said Wayne County Sheriff Nathan Hale. Handbook Of Texas Online: CONCRETE COLLEGE earned the doctor of divinity degree from Madison College and later taught in tennessee. For a time the institution was the largest boarding school in the state http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/CC/kbc41.html
Extractions: format this article to print CONCRETE COLLEGE . The first school in Concrete, DeWitt County, was conducted by James Norman Smith, qv who had taught President James K. Polk in his native state of Tennessee. What developed after legislative charters in 1856 and 1873 was a typical nineteenth-century rural college. Dr. Robert Peebles qv and other pioneer Concrete settlers sponsored and lobbied for the school, the administration of which was entrusted under the charter of 1856 to J. M. Baker, F. M. Taylor, Josh Stevens, J. R. North, and Francis J. Lynch. qv Rev. John Van Epps Covey qv began teaching in the community about 1864, and by the mid-1870s a ten-acre campus had taken shape along Coon Hollow. The main building measured 150 by fifty feet, with a kitchen and dining room attached. Coeds shared the stone house of the Covey family, and the male students were assigned to more primitive, two-room frame buildings. Covey's curriculum favored the classics and business. Music and penmanship were offered, and farming techniques were taught in a cultivated area adjacent to the college. More than a dozen instructors taught an annual average of perhaps 100 students during the twenty-year existence of the college. Rev. Woodlief Thomas, vice president of the institution, and Professor J. D. Bradfors saw to it that Hebrew, Greek, and Latin fundamentals were covered; Professor Grothus taught German; professors Hueber, Woolsey, and Bonney conducted classes in business and commerce; Misses Anna Stell and Adlia Debery taught the students of the primary school (some pupils were admitted before the age of twelve), and Mrs. Eisenmeyer and Miss Tunn molded the social amenities in the "ladies department." Mrs. Covey taught sewing, and musical talents were developed by professors Young and Fuchs.
