Writing some reflections and information on the subject of technical writing. understoodon an exam or homework, you loose A piece of mathematical writing, such as a http://www.cs.unr.edu/~sushil/researchAdvice/MihirBellare/writing.html
Extractions: This document records some reflections and information on the subject of technical writing. It is written for computer science students, who presumably have more familiarity with things like programming than with mathematics, and tries to explain some of what mathematics is about by analogies with things more familiar in computer science. The views here are entirely personal. They do not reflect those of the university, the department, or other faculty. Paul Dirac, a famous physicist, one said the following about a paper written by a colleague: ``This isn't right. It isn't even wrong.'' The worst things you can write are those that don't make sense. If you get it right, well and good. If you get it clear but wrong, at least you can discuss it with others, change it, improve, and get partial credit if this happens to be an exam or homework. But if it does not make sense, you are in a bind. This is a important lesson to learn. One has to put effort into making sure that what one says makes sense. In the domain for which this document is written, this means mathematical sense. Communication, especially written, plays a central role in understanding the materiel and doing well. A large fraction of the difficulties that one finds student having stem from lack of facility with mathematical language, and writing things that don't make sense. Getting over this hurdle is not only the path to doing better in, say, the class you are now taking, but benefits your whole academic career and beyond. How can one do better here?

Guidelines For Academic Paper Homework Assignments If you want to include the homework number, this These are items of technical writingand structural organization or visit the The Undergraduate writing Center http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/lisak/academicHWGuidelines.html
Extractions: The following information applies to all papers that you write for the Academic portion of our class. Additional information, specific to individual assignments, will be discussed in class. Papers should be at least four pages long, broken down into the following parts: Title Page Bullet Points Page Body of the Paper A title should attract the reader's attention and give some quick information about your topic. Think up an interesting, accurate, descriptive title for your paper. *Never* simply call it "Homework #X". Also avoid using the same title as the journal article. That topic is not the same as your topic. They are writing about some CS topic; you are writing about how well they wrote their article. Finally, when choosing your title, keep in mind that this is a technical paper for fellow Computer Scientists: you don't want to be dull and boring, but neither do you want to appear cute or silly. Follow the title with your name, the date, and the class name. If you want to include the homework number, this is the place to put it. Don't write your full social security number on the paper. If you are in the habit of doing this, it is probably a good habit to break. You should keep your SSN private unless it is explicitly requested. This page should contain four individual bullet-pointed items, each *no more* than one sentence long. Each point should be a full grammatically correct English sentence, and stand on it's own away from the other bullet points.

Some Advice On Writing A Technical Report Some Advice on writing a technical Report. Alan T. Sherman. DRAFT April 27, 1996. The technical Report (TR) is a common written form through which computer scientist communicate their findings. http://www.cs.umbc.edu/~sherman/Courses/documents/TR_how_to.html
Extractions: DRAFT: April 27, 1996 The Technical Report (TR) is a common written form through which computer scientist communicate their findings. Each TR should have a focused topic that is developed logically along some clearly identified perspective. The major components of a TR are title, author information, date, keywords, informative abstract, body, acknowledgments, references, and appendices. Typically, the body is organized into four sections: motivation, methods, results, and discussion. This document offers advice and specifications for writing TRs. Communicating results is a crucial aspect of doing research. Through such communication other people can learn about and benefit from the findings. Often such communication includes a written document known as a Technical Report (TR) . The successful researcher must master this important written form. A TR should explain what you did, why you did it, what you discovered, and what is significant of your findings. The report should identify clearly what is novel about your work, and how it relates to prior knowledge. There should be a focused topic, and an attitude about this topic. The topic should be developed according to the attitude in a thorough, logical, and orderly fashion. Throughout, the author should be helpful to the reader. The report should include the following components: descriptive title, author name and affiliation, date, informative abstract, list of keywords, body, acknowledgments, and list of references. Additional separate appendices, where appropriate, may also be included. The standard four-part outline for the body of a technical report is motivation, methods, results, and discussion.
