Special Olympics Web links Spectator teams needed for World Games When the largest sporting event of the year the Special Olympics World Games comes to the Triangle in June, organizers want cheering fans to fill the stands. To make sure that happens, theyre recruiting Triangle residents to attend the events and support the Special Olympics competitors from around the globe. We want to make sure that someone is always there to cheer them on, said Greg Holden, head of NC States recruitment effort. That makes the Games complete. The games offer sports competition for athletes both children and adults with mental retardation or closely related development disabilities. More than 7,000 athletes from 150 countries will come to the Triangle to compete in 19 sports during the games, which run from June 26 to July 4. Games organizers are calling for and assembling spectator teams to cheer on specific groups of athletes from various countries, or to attend events at specific athletic venues. They are especially looking for groups of 20 or more people including church groups, university departments, businesses, neighborhood associations and Boy and Girl Scout troops but wont turn away smaller groups.

Extractions: THE COMPETITION The 12 men's teams and ten women's teams are split into two even pools, each team having to play every other in the pool. The top four teams from each pool then advance to the quarter-finals. The quarter-final winners advance to semi-finals, while the four losing teams play each other again to decide fifth to eighth place. The losing semi-finalists play for the bronze. The game is played on a court 40 metres long and 20 metres wide, divided in two by a centre line and having a goal at either end. The goal is three metres wide and two metres high. The goal area is D-shaped, the arc six metres out from the goal mouth. The free throw line, a dotted line, forms an arc three metres further out into the court. The leather ball weighs between 425g and 475g for men and between 325g and 400g for women. A game consists of 30-minute halves with a ten-minute break at half-time. The game starts, and post-goal play resumes, with a throw-off; a player stands with one foot on the centre line and throws the ball to a team-mate behind the line at least three metres away. Goals are hard to score in that nobody but the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area. Players may use any part of their bodies except their lower legs and feet to handle the ball, though they are not allowed to throw the ball to themselves; more than one touch of the ball must be part of a continuous movement such as a dribble. Players can hold the ball for only three seconds before passing, dribbling or shooting, they must take no more than three steps with the ball, and can take only three further steps during a dribble.

Extractions: This book contains many helpful things for players and especially coatches in Team Handball. You can find almost everything about this sport I have ever heard of. Since I was born I live with this sport (my father was a professional, now he is a coatch and I am an active player) so I can only tell you: buy it, read it and learn from it becouse there are not many books of this kind. This book helped me to rise my game on a higher level. This book was instrumental in our decision to teach Team Handball to our Physical Education Majors at Butler University in Indianapolis. Besides the fact that the book spells out the sport step-by-step, there are many useful tips and drills to aid in the teaching process. In addition, I know Reita Clanton and know her to be one of the most professional, knowledgable and personable people I have met. She has done wonders for the sport, and continues to promote the learning through this text. I...

History Of Handball impact on the international competitions (especially the Olympics) in the Handballis now played on every habitable continent on this http://members.ozemail.com.au/~mblaser/history/hbalhist.html
Extractions: The origins of Handball are a subject of great debate. One view is that it was invented in Germany, back in the late 19th century, as an outdoor sport to keep soccer players fit during the summer months. Outdoor Handball involved 11 players on each side and was played on a virtually full-size turf soccer ground with soccer goals. It was mainly played with soccer rules, except it was played with the hands and kicking the ball was illegal rather than the other way round. However, there are records of handball-style games going back to antiquity. The sport was depicted on a tombstone carving in Athens dated 600BC. The first match of the modern era was officially recorded on 29 October 1917 in Berlin, Germany. Outdoor Handball had its only Olympic Games appearance in the XIth Olympiad (1936 Berlin Games). The first international match recorded was played on 3 September 1925 with Germany defeating Austria, 6:3. Indoor Handball was invented in the 1940s in Denmark. This is a 7-a-side game, played on a court slightly larger than a basketball court with smaller goals than its outdoor counterpart. Again, this sport flourished in the Germanic nations where it was hoped that it would appeal to a wider audience. With rules from other sports like basketball being introduced, this made the game simpler to play and more exciting to watch. The fact that it became a winter sport added to the spectator appeal being away from the cold, seated in comfort, with more action and excitement and higher scores than soccer. The sport is now played all over the world and was reintroduced as an Olympic event for the XXth Olympiad (1972 Munich Games).

Special Olympics Web links What are the Special Olympics? Special Olympics competitions, including the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games, are patterned after the Olympic Games. Athletes around the world train for and compete in more than 15,000 games, meets, and tournaments in summer and winter sports each year. Selected athletes from nearly 150 countries then go on to compete in World Games every two years, alternating between summer and winter Games. By assigning athletes to divisions according to their age and abilities, Special Olympics gives every athlete a reasonable chance to win. Athletes from all divisions may advance to Chapter, National, and World Games. Theres a chance for people without mental retardation to get into the Games. A program called Unified Sports® brings persons without mental retardation and of comparable age and athletic ability, together on the same team with persons with mental retardation. Unified Sports® was started in 1987, and it helps to integrate athletes with mental retardation into school and community sports programs. Unified teams from round the globe will compete in the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games. During the 99 Games, competition in 19 sports will be held at venues throughout the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area of North Carolina.

Extractions: History and Current State of the Game Handball is an international 7-a-side indoor sport played in 147 countries around the world. It emerged from an amalgam of similar sports in the early part of the 20th century. It has been an official Olympic sport since the 1972 Games in Munich. The international governing body for the sports is the International Handball Federation (IHF) whose headquarters are in Basil, Switzerland. Handball has developed from a number of similar games, which were in existence at the start of the 20th century. These games were played in Central and Northern Europe and in 1926 Standard International Rules were established. In 1928 the International Amateur Handball Federation was established by 11 countries during the Summer Olympic Games. This body later became the present International Handball Federation. As the popularity of handball spread throughout Europe, major modifications were being considered in Northern Europe due to the more severe climate. The need for indoor handball became apparent. As an indoor game, handball became faster and more colourful and rapidly grew to become popular throughout Europe.
