Its very name is confusing even to an American who knows quite a bit about sports. The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena , the Danish handbold , and the German Torball All three were based on soccer, but essentially replaced the foot with the hand, so that the ball could be advanced by batting or throwing, rather than by kicking. Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably and began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden.

In fact, ask many Americans what they think handball is, and they'll probably describe a game similar to racquetball with two competitors slapping a small ball off a wall with their hands. Not so. The easiest way to describe handball is, "soccer with the hands instead of the feet." Much like soccer, it can be both physical and fast, with shots being thrown at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The sport used to be played on a large turf field with 11 players per side, but has more recently been moved indoors and played with with seven players, which has sped up the game even more. The object is to score more goals than the other team by throwing a ball (somewhat smaller than a soccer ball) into a D-shaped net. Games consist of two 30-minute halves. Players can only take three steps after catching the ball and can only hold the ball for three seconds before they must either pass, dribble (like basketball), or shoot. A defender can use his/her hands or body to block a ball but can't use the feet or lower legs (except for goalies). Like soccer, free throws, corner throws, and penalty throws become an integral part of the game.

This vision is not correct without a doubt, team handball is not off the wall. Team handball is a dynamic court game that is fun to play and exciting to watch. First-time spectators describe team handball as soccer with your hands, but they also notice elements that remind them of basketball, water polo and ice hockey. Participants and spectators alike enjoy the fast continuous play, the body contact and the goalie saves as both teams each of which are composed of 6 court players and a goalie use their natural athletic skills of running, jumping, throwing and catching. Team handball had its origins in Europe in the late 1920s, about the same time basketball was developing in the United States, and today enjoys great popularity throughout the world. The International Handball Federation (IHF) consists of 136 member nations and 12 million registered players. A men's handball competition was included on the Olympic calendar at the Munich Games in 1972, after a 34 year absence, followed by the inclusion of women's competition in the 1976 Games in Montreal. During this past quadrennial, the U.S. Women won the Pan American Games and finished 8th in the Olympic Games in Atlanta. The U.S. men finished 4th in the Pan American Games and a very respectable 9th versus an excellent field in Atlanta.
