Extractions: By Joylynn Benefiel This interesting, little hunter once lived on the Australian mainland. Farmers and ranchers feared that the Tasmanian Devil would wipe out their animals. As a result, this creature was exterminated on the mainland. However, the Tasmanian Devil can still be found on the Island of Tasmania, south of mainland Australia. The Tasmanian devil prefers to live alone in a burrow, dense undergrowth, or a hollow log. Tasmanian Devils usually do not fight each other, unless it is over food. They like to hunt at night. The Tasmanian Devils diet includes; rodents, lizards, wallabies , sheep and chickens. They have a superior immune system, which allows them to eat dead animals that have already begun to rot. Tasmanian Devils are excellent scavengers. I hope you enjoyed reading about this amazing and remarkable creature. I know I have enjoyed learning about the Tasmanian Devil. PBS: The Living Edens: Tasmania: Sympathy For The Devil Instead of the expected battle, we were witness to an incredibly endearing pictureof two tasmanian devils spooning as they slept their dinner off. http://www.pbs.org/edens/tasmania/sympathy.html
Extractions: The devil has been described as a fierce, bloodthirsty creature that stalks the night looking for food, fighting and crying with blood-chilling scream. Although made famous by Warner Brothers cartoons, compared to many of its fellow marsupials there is relatively little known about this animal. I must admit the idea working with a mysterious, fearsome, deadly creature of the night attracted me to the devil immediately. However, after almost two years of working with the devil and enjoying myself immensely, I could not have been more wrong about this animal. It is secretive and shy, but deadly and fearsome? I feel its reputation is very undeserving. In the wild, these animals must compete for everything, including food, shelter, and mating, and these activities are usually accompanied with growls and the telltale devil's scream. My first close encounter with a devil (like most people) was in a wildlife park. It was feeding time, and the devils were hungry. The keeper was coming around with buckets of wallaby meat, and was piling it into the cage of two devils. The devils' screams could be heard across the park, their teeth bared and jaws snapping it looked likely that a fight would ensue. This continued until each devil had grabbed and consumed their fill.

Extractions: The last of the Tasmanian devils known to be living outside their native Australia died Tuesday at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, zoo officials said. Zookeepers learned last month that the 7½-year-old marsupial named Coolah had inoperable cancer. Coolah was born in January 1997 at the Cincinnati Zoo and came to Fort Wayne through a loan agreement with the Toronto Zoo. The Fort Wayne zoo, citing records maintained by the International Species Inventory System, said that Coolah was the last of the animals outside Australia since the death last August of a female Tasmanian devil at the San Diego Zoo.
Extractions: The Tasmanian Devil is actually a marsupial and not a dog like most people think. It gets its name from the Island of Tasmania off the coast of Australia where it is from. It has a very bad temper and makes chilling screech sounds that can be heard miles away the early locals used to call it the devil because of the awful sound it makes. It is also the largest surviving carnivorous marsupial in Australia. Males are larger then females. Males weigh up to 12 kilograms and are 30 cm tall at the shoulder. Devils mate in March if the weather permits and the young are born in early April after a short 21 day gestation period. Only 2 or 3 yound survive out of about 6 babies. Only the strongest devils get the 4 spots in the mothers pouch which greatly improves their chances of survival. The parents make their den in a hollow log most often and this is where they rear the pups.

Tasmanian Devil - Hell In Van Diemens Land Aside from Aborigine s, the only threat to the devils was the Thyacine ortasmanian Tiger. 2) The tasmanian VFL team is known as the devils. http://www.convictcreations.com/animals/devil.htm
Extractions: Hell in Van Diemans Land How a small, furry, 30 cm high marsupial came to be known as the "Devil" is best understood by considering the history of Tasmania, or as it was originally named, Van Diemans Land Van Diemans Land was a penal colony set up to be a place of extreme cruelty that would strike the fear of God into people considering stealing food in England or repeating their crime in Sydney. For crimes such as having their hands in their pockets, men were flogged until their backbones protruded through their mangled flesh and their shoes filled with blood. If they survived, they may have been ordered to grind pepper so the air born dust would infect their wounds and cause them excruciating pain. In an attempt to cure their criminality, others were depraved of their senses with head masks that cut off all light and sound. Although not successful in preventing crime, the masks did do a great job in sending them insane and so soon asylums were being built alongside the prisons. It was in this environment that the Convicts realised that hell did exist and that they were in it. They were expecting to be greeted by the devil and it didn't take long for what they thought was the devil to appear.

Research is continuing to determine the cause of the cancer-like disease that has wiped out up to 85 per cent of devil populations in some areas. Greens Senator Bob Brown says the State Government has allocated nothing further in this week's Budget for programs to save the marsupial. He says the devil population decline has been catastrophic and urgent action is needed. "I'm calling on both the Federal and State Environment Ministers to say at what stage we are [at], in moving towards having them listed as endangered," he said. "Therefore the mechanisms coming into play which will ensure, for example, that their habitat is protected, both on public and private land."

Extractions: This tough little carnivore resembles, in some respects, a small bear. Found today only on the island of Tasmania, south of Australia, it is still fairly common there and protected by the government. Weighing between 6 and 10 kg, it received its name from the early white settlers on whose poultry and other small stock it often preyed. In the wild, its main food supply consists of small wallabies and kangaroos, birds, lizards and probably frogs and crayfish. Equipped with powerful jaws, it is not hesitant to attack animals much larger than itself. When excited, the pale ears gradually turn red. Despite its ferocious reputation, the little devils have proven to be easily tamed and, indeed, have become affectionate and playful companions. They are very clean, fond of water, and love to bask in the sun.

Extractions: School of Zoology, University of Tasmania The largest living marsupial carnivore, the Tasmanian devil is the size of a small, stoutly-built dog. Ideal for their role as Australia's only specialized mammalian scavenger, devils have a massive head with powerful jaws and strong teeth. Indeed, their scientific name means flesh ( Sarco -) lover (- philus ). Males at 9 kg are larger than females 7 kg; occasionally, males can reach a massive 12 kg. Their jet black fur, unusual for marsupials, is usually marked with white on the chest and sometimes on the rump. While their black colour, pink ears that flush purple when they are agitated, and their blood-curdling nocturnal screams probably earnt them their common name, their true nature, wary though somewhat belligerent, belies their reputation. Once occurring across the Australian mainland, devils disappeared after the arrival of the dingo. They are now restricted to Tasmania (Bass Strait prevented dingoes from getting here). Devils reach highest abundances in the dry eucalypt forests and woodlands in northern Tasmania but are found all over the island state. Although populations have fluctuated this century, their status seems to be secure.

Extractions: WWWF GRUDGE MATCH The Setting It's a Monday evening in Washington, D.C., as Richard Gephardt and Al Gore call their daily press conference. "This legislation is outrageous!" yells Gephardt. "Not only does this Extreme-Right-Wing (tm) bill passed today in Congress starve MILLIONS of school-children, but it also leaves the elderly without any health care! And worst of all, it allows a ten-day window for government-subsidized destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest! During Earth Day (tm)! This Radical Contract ON America (tm) must be stopped!" Several hours later, Newt Gingrich is asked about the consequences of this new legislation. "What?! Schoolkids?! Rain forest?! It was Term Limits Legislation! It has nothing to do with any of that!" But it's too late. The media has already reported what Gephardt said about the bill. And as we all know, if it's on the news, it must be true. Thus, plans to destroy the rain forest are begun. The starving of school children and the Kevorkianizing of the elderly are also begun, but that won't be chronicled here. (Note: Normally, President Clinton would have vetoed this legislation, but there was a rider involving immunity of elected officials from Bimbo Lawsuits (tm) and he was forced to sign it.) According to Gore, the bill allocates 50,000 Kronkites to the person who is responsible for bringing down the largest area of rain forest in the next ten days. Two people step forward for the challenge: Paul Bunyan, who needs the money for Blue Oxen Chow (tm) and his tanker-truck-a-day lager habit, and the Tasmanian Devil, who would buy 50,000 Kronkites worth of Hossenfeffah (tm).

Extractions: The mostly black, nocturnal marsupial, which grows to the size of a small stocky dog and weighs about 12kg (25lb), was named by European settlers 200 years ago for its snarls and spine-chilling screeches, fierce displays and powerful jaws. These are four times as strong as a similar sized dog and can crunch through animal bones.
Ed Lonnon's Endangered Species Homepage - Tasmanian Devil tasmanian DEVIL (Sarcophilus harrisii), Breaking news August 2003 - Adevastating disease is sweeping through Tasmania s devil population. http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~endangered/devil.htm
Extractions: The Tasmanian Devil was once widespread over mainland Australia but is now restricted to and is abundant in Tasmania. It probably became extinct on the mainland due to increasing aridity and the spread of the Dingo. Although occurring in all major habitat types in Tasmania, it is most abundant in sclerophyll forest and coastal woodland, especially where it is interspersed with open grassland. Diet A wide variety of food is eaten including insects, beached fish and birds, but small mammals are the principal food. They are efficient scavengers and strong jaw muscles and teeth enable them to consume every part of a carcass - including hide and skulls. Individuals can eat 40% of their bodyweight in one night. They usually forage alone but several individuals may feed simultaneously on a large carcass
