The Arab influence on Zanzibar and Pemba Islands is evident in the people, who are a mix of Shirazia (from Persia), Arabs, Comorians (from the Comoros Islands) and Bantu from the mainland, though the latter predominate. Asians are a significant minority especially in the towns and cities. Europeans (either by descent or expatriate) are a smaller minority. The major non-Bantu people on the mainland are the Maasai (Nilotic speakers) who inhabit the northeastern section of the country. Swahili and English are the official languages, with English the principal language of commerce. There are also many local African tongues, reflecting the tribal diversity of the country. Outside the cities and towns, far fewer local people speak English than in comparable areas in Kenya. It's said that the Swahili spoken on Zanzibar is of a much purer form than elsewhere, and quite a few travellers head for the island to learn it. The two main religions are Christianity and Islam, with Hindus making up about a quarter of the population. The majority of Muslims are concentrated along the coast and in the islands. Compared to Islam, Christianity took a long time to make an impact, and even then (during the 19th century) it was practiced mainly among tribes of the interior. There are still many tribes who follow neither of the big-name religions and instead worship the ancient spirit of their choice. Principal among them are the Maasai, who put their faith in the god Engai and his Messiah, Kindong'oi, from whom their priests are said to be descended. It's claimed that there is no religious bias present in the country's political and civil administration.

In international competitions, Tanzanian sportsmen have excelled in long-distance running. Oral storytelling traditions and tribal dancing are an important part of the cultural life of the rural population. The University of Dar es Salaam has an active theatre arts group. Among the visual arts, Makonde carvers from southern Tanzania are renowned for their abstract ebony carvings, and Zanzibar is famous for its elaborately carved doors and Arab chests. Basket weaving, pottery, and musical instrument making are prevalent in many rural areas.

But little else is known of the people who populated the region until the Masai, a fierce warrior people, moved in from the north and claimed what is now northern Tanzania. The area was colonized by Germany in the 1880s and then fell under the control of the British in the aftermath of World War I. The British, who ruled the area as a League of Nations protectorate, never expected to stay long and, consequently, did little to improve the country's infrastructure. That set the stage for later difficulties. Tanganyika, the part of the nation on the African mainland, was granted independence in 1961, followed by the island/nation of Zanzibar two years later. In 1964 the two countries merged as the United Republic of Tanzania. After Nyerere's resignation in 1985, his successor, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, reduced the government's control over the economy, a move intended to attract foreign investment and loans. Benjamin Mkapa, who was elected president in 1995 in the country's first multi-party elections, intensified those efforts. He has worked with the World Bank and IMF to implement economic reforms and secure financial aid and debt relief.

I have no hesitation in saying that, on this level, my affection for Tanzania is greater that for any other African country I have visited. It is an oasis of peace and egalitarian values in a continent stoked up with political and tribal tensions, and its social mood embodies all that I respect in African culture. As a generalisation, I've always found Tanzanians to be polite and courteous, yet also warm and sincere, both amongst themselves and in their dealings with foreigners. The one thing I can say with near certainty is that you will enjoy Tanzania. Whether you decide to stick to the conventional tourist circuit, opt to carry a dusty backpack around the southern highlands, or charter a plane to go chimp-tracking in the rainforests of Mahale, Tanzania is a wonderful country.
