To do this, I first took a photo looking through the viewfinder with one eye, putting a point of a framing mark (or a dirt spot on the prism!) on some object in the distance. After the film was advanced, I moved the viewfinder to the other eye while keeping my head stationary, aligned the mark on the same object in the distance, and took the second photo. This process has been made easier since the introduction of auto-wind cameras. HOW THEY'RE VIEWED After processing the slides, I place the left of the pair of slides into an old Gitzo dual slide viewer for the 3-D effect. This viewer was made by the Gitzo tripod company in Europe, but was discontinued many years ago. It has two single slide viewers mounted on a plastic rail (with thumb screws) and adjustable oculars for focusing. You can get the same effect by purchasing two small individual slide viewers (the kind you hold up to the light to see the slides) and holding them together for viewing with both eyes. (I also experimented with gluing them together, finding I needed to place something under the joint before gluing so that they were slightly angled inward when held up to the light.) When we look at something with our two eyes, we see in three dimensions because our brain interprets depth by comparing the two images from the left and right eyes. To simulate this photographically we need two photos of the same scene, taken from slightly different positions. This can be done using two cameras mounted together, or a multi-lens camera designed for stereo photography, but can also be done with just one camera - even the most basic type. Its simply a matter of taking one photo, moving the camera to one side, then taking another photo. Same scene, slightly different viewpoint. The easiest and most flexible method of viewing the two photos is the "cross-eye" method, where the photos are placed side by side with the "left" photo on the right, and "right" photo on the left. By slightly crossing the eyes, each eye looks at the photo meant for it. When the images match up and focus, the scene appears in life-like 3D, or a good approximation of it. This method can be hard to learn for the first time, but once mastered it is really quite easy. One advantage of this method, apart from requiring no equipment for viewing, is that the photos can be any size. Big enlargements on a lounge room wall can be enjoyed in 3D from across the room.

The method used in the course taught at Caltech makes use of an LCD projector, a video camera, and various computer interfaces. This system produces good results on medium-sized objects at high speed. Commercial systems, such as those produced by Cyberware produce better results by means of laser light sources and multiple sensors. Cyberware systems scan from small to large objects at medium speeds, but can cost over $400,000, excluding the host computer. My goal for this project was to build an inexpensive scanning system using readily-available components. The particular system I produced can scan small objects at a slow speed, although the object size could be increased with minor system changes. After collecting books on stereo for about twenty years, I tried to compile a chronological list of every English-language book on the history and technology of stereocopy published up to 1986. This bibliography appeared in STEREO WORLD, Vol 14(1): 44-5, March/April 1987, a very important publication in the field of stereocopy that is still being published by the National Stereoscopic Association. A link to NSA is given below. I included all 3-D cinematography texts as well as major 3-D camera guides, hardbound and paperback. A list in chronological order seemed more useful for collectors and researchers and reveals years of greatest activity and development. Not included in this bibliography are magazine articles, 3-D picture books, 3-D drawing books, books on holography, stereo tour guides (such as the Keystone Travel Series), and small pamphlets. These items, as well as an exhaustive listing of foreign-language materials, are contained in a series of bibliographies published in German by 3-D historian and stereographer, Walter Selle. S tereo Base The stereo base is the actual distance between the two lenses, two cameras, or shift between the taking of images. This distance is determined by a mathematical formula that is relative to the focal length of the lenses, the distance to the nearest object in the scene, the location of infinity, and the final use and purpose of the image. This knowledge is critical toward producing a pair of stereo images that will be representative of the original scene, and be easily viewable by your audience.
