Extractions: Swine manure can be handled as a solid, semi-solid, or liquid. Alternative handling systems for swine manure are shown in Fig. 14. Additional bedding or drying is required to handle manure as a solid. Solid-manure handling is common for shed and lot systems used for swine gestation and finishing. Where shed and open-lot systems are used, solid storage for lot scrapings and shed manure are required, along with facilities for controlling runoff (Fig. 15). See "Open-lot Runoff Control." Semi-solid and liquid-manure handling are more common in modern swine-production facilities. Liquid handling requires less time and labor to collect, transfer, and store manure. Manure can be stored in-building with partial or full-slotted floor pits, in an outdoor below-ground or above-ground storage, or treated in a lagoon. Undiluted swine waste is usually stored, agitated, and land applied. Dilute swine waste, such as from a flushing system, usually undergoes some type of treatment before application. A primary objective in swine-manure handling is to minimize the accumulation of noxious gases and odors. Pit ventilation can be used to reduce odors and gases within the building. Removing manure from the building to an outdoor storage can also reduce odor and gas accumulations. Manure can be removed from the building with manual or mechanical scrapers, gravity-flow gutters, and flushing gutters. Mechanical scrapers are often used in shallow gutters below slotted floors. Gravity-drain gutters have Y, U, V, or rectangular shapes. When gutters are full (usually 3 days to 2 weeks), a drain plug is pulled, and manure flows by gravity to an outdoor storage or lagoon. The deep, narrow gutter gravity-flow system is drained about every 3 days (Fig. 3 ). For a complete description of the deep, narrow gutter, refer to AEX 702

Extractions: Home Page The Mississippi swine industry has changed and will continue to change. Small operations, producing feeder pigs as a source of supplemental income, have changed to farrow through finish operations and company owned contract production where swine is a major source of income. Technological advances have been responsible for dramatic changes in the swine industry. Segregated early weaning, split sex feeding, artificial insemination, amino acid supplementation, producer networking, etc. are examples of technology that producers should consider incorporating into their production units. Consumer demand has also influenced the swine industry. Swine producers must produce a pork product to satisfy the pork packer/processor who in turn must satisfy the consumer. Consumers will purchase pork products that taste good, convenient to use, inexpensive, nutritious, healthy, and safe. Public concern also influences the way pigs are produced today. Swine producers must produce pork in a manner to satisfy public concerns about the environment, control of odor, animal rights, and food safety. Although these demands increase the cost of pork production, the burden of this cost often remains with the producers. Public concern of environmental issues have halted growth of the swine industry in Mississippi. Until these issues are satisfied, industry growth will not take place regardless of the size of operation.

Extractions: AR Agriculture Home Swine The decrease in number and size of swine operations in Arkansas depicts the change in the swine industry from small and medium sized independents to large contract swine operations. Current estimates indicate 90 to 95 percent or more of the swine in Arkansas are grown under contract. The contracting company supplies the hogs, feed, fieldmen for herd health and production management and a market for the hogs. Major work with swine has involved providing Extension agents and independent operators with information on health, feed ingredients, ration formulation and facilities. Extension assists the Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation with policy development, the Arkansas Department of Corrections with their swine program and the Arkansas State Fair with swine shows. The Swine Production in Arkansas publication covers most aspects of swine production and is suitable for small and beginning operators. Extractions: USDA, APHIS, VS, Swine Health Staff USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services is committed to participating with pork producers, livestock marketing groups, packing plants and regulatory agencies in developing an effective, efficient, affordable and dependable system of identifying swine. To demonstrate this commitment, a new position of National Swine Identification Coordinator has been established on the Swine Health Staff. A system of producer applied premise identification which can be used on the farm, in the markets, in the slaughterhouse, and conceivably to the final product is being explored at the present time. New technologies, such as bar-coding, which will allow electronic data transfer of premise identification at each critical point in the pork chain, will be an important part of the new system. Pilot projects and feasibility studies are now underway. IMMEDIATE GOALS (This Year) USDA, APHIS, VS, Swine Health Staff (SHS) will facilitate the promotion of the wide use of on-farm identification systems in general. In cooperation with producer organizations, extension agencies and educational institutions, SHS will promote the benefits of swine identification as the basis of accurate farm record systems allowing the development of productive decision-making strategies and providing information to improve productivity and profitability.
