Eddie Reese, the veteran University of Texas men's swimming coach, has enjoyed profound success. So it's hard to fathom that he'd look back with any trace of wistfulness. But if he had one thing to do over again, he said he might have skipped serving as assistant coach of the U.S. Olympic men's swimming team at the 1996 Atlanta Games. "I wanted to be a TV announcer," said Reese, who will be the U.S. men's head coach at August's Athens Olympics. "Then I could have convinced parents to put their kids in swimming for the values it teaches. Swimmers are special. I would love to get the personalities out there." "We do all the old-fashioned things and the soon-to-be-forgotten things," said Reese, who has coached at UT since 1978. "I try to find a way to get everybody to go faster.

Extractions: E-mail Gold mine: Phelps could sparkle in Olympics as he chases Spitz 01:43 AM CDT on Monday, May 3, 2004 By CATHY HARASTA / The Dallas Morning News Michael Phelps pulls his Cadillac Escalade into a spot next to the Meadowbrook Aquatic and Fitness Center. "When I get out of the car, the last song stays in my head," Phelps said. "It's there all during practice, in my head."And that's where it stays; Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, sternly enforces his pool rule that silence is golden, especially where workout music is concerned. Bowman wants Phelps to hear every word of his coach's instructions en route to August's Athens Olympics. Nicknamed the "Baltimore Bullet," Phelps, 18, could race to the status of the Games' signature athlete. If his gold rush pans out, Phelps could tie Mark Spitz's record seven swimming gold medals at a single Olympics. Phelps also is a corporation's dream – a no-baggage boy wonder whose wholesome image could be super-sized by the Olympic spotlight. Operating as a unit, Phelps-Bowman was built to withstand pressure. The positive athlete-coach relationship kicked in to produce Phelps' world records in the 200-meter butterfly, 200 individual medley and 400 IM. But their rapport has not made them clones of each other. That they don't always agree probably balances their attack on swimming's record books.

Extractions: Or for that matter this year's addition to the Olympic canon, its cousin, synchronized diving? There are three ways an activity can come into the Olympics: as a completely new sport; as a discipline, a branch of an existing sport; or as an event, a competition within a discipline. Triathlon is making its Olympic debut as a sport in Sydney; trampoline, which is part of gymnastics, is a new discipline; and women's pole vaulting the latest track and field event. Continue Article The first step to becoming a recognized sport of the Summer Games requires being organized into an international federation and having male participants in at least 75 countries on four continents and female participants in at least 40 countries on three continents. Once the International Olympic Committee votes to recognize a federation, the next step becomes a matter of lobbying. This is supposed to be done without the help of that now-banned Olympic activity, bribery. The IOC now recognizes 31 federations in everything from bridge to korfball (it is beyond Explainer's capacity to explain korfball Since the IOC wants to keep the number of athletes to the current 10,000 (!), it also helps if a sport has telegenic participants, which may be why triathlon made it from recognized international federation to medal sport in a swift 11 years, and bowling, recognized since 1979, languishes. (Their new Olympic marketing campaign slogan: "Strike Gold.")

Extractions: HISTORY It started as a male sport, with the earliest recorded competition in 1890 in Berlin. It has persevered under a myriad of names, including artistic, ornamental, scientific, figure or pattern swimming, as well as water ballet. By the turn of the century, though, women had come to the fore of synchronized swimming. A champion Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman delighted audiences with dances performed in a glass tank of water in New York in 1907. Interest began to build. In 1924 in Montreal, the world's first provincial championship was held. The first champion, Peg Seller, became an important pioneer for the fledgling sport, and from there it spread to the US, where it soon flourished in amateur swimming clubs nationwide. Chicago later emerged as the hub of the sport's development, beginning with a stunning display at the 1934 World's Fair. Diver and former gymnast Katherine Curtis trained 60 swimmers, known as The Modern Mermaids, in a series of moves that gave birth to the term "synchronized swimming." It's international popularity soared further when swimmer Esther Williams performed in a string of MGM "aqua musicals" in the 1940s and '50s. By then a contracted star at MGM, she starred in several films, known as "aqua musicals," centered around synchronized swimming. One of the biggest, Million Dollar Mermaid, was an affectionate portrait of Annette Kellerman.
