Extractions: Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)

Extractions: Massimiliano Rosolino hopes to wash away past Olympic failures at Sydney. Start Archives Click here for Archives of Olympic Update. After scoring their best-ever results at this year's European Championships with six gold medals, Italy's swimmers are looking to score big at the 2000 Games. "It's the first time we are going to the Olympics with this many athletes who have a chance of winning," says coach Alberto Castagnetti. "Let's hope the Olympic adventure will bring positive results." The country's top contender is Massimiliano Rosolino, who is looking forward to taking on the world. A front crawl and medley specialist, Rosolino will have a few mixed feelings in Australia, his mother's birthplace. But the 22-year old is looking to put a disappointing showing at the Atlanta gGames behind him. "Four years ago, I was still quite young," Rosolino says. "I had just turned 18. This year I hope to go a little bit better because it's going to be in Australia where my mother was born. I have to go really fast. Even against Australians."

Extractions: Teammates Gary Hall Jr and Anthony Ervin could not have written a better ending in their 50 meter final. AP By Mitch Gelman, CNNSI.com SYDNEY, Australia United States swimmers Gary Hall, Jr. and Anthony Ervin finished in a dead heat to win gold in the 50-meter freestyle race on Friday night. Hall and Ervin, who train together on a team in Phoenix, swam right next to each other, Hall in lane four and Ervin in lane three. Hall broke first off the blocks and closed fast, while Ervin swam a steady and consistent race. They finished in a time of 21.98. After realizing that they shared the gold, Ervin and Hall hugged and slapped hands while in the pool. Then, they took a victory lap to chants of "U.S.A., U.S.A." from teammates and fans. "I don't mind sharing the gold medal podium," Hall said. "It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, a guy I practice with all the time. It was like another a day of practice."

Extractions: The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating. The first recorded competition was held May 27, 1939, between Chicago Teacher's College, coached by Curtis, and Wright Junior College, also in Chicago.

Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History TRIATHLON A swim club in Marseilles, France, held a three-sport event in 1921, consisting of a bicycle leg of about 7 kilometers, a 5-kilometer run, and a 200-meter swim. It was called the Course Des Trois Sports (Race of Three Sports). Evidently there was no follow-up on that, though, and it was more than 50 years before the modern triathlon was created. It grew out of a run-swim biathlon staged in San Diego by David Pain in 1972 to celebrate his 50th birthday. The birthday biathlon was repeated in 1973. One of the competitors, Jack Johnstone, enjoyed it so much that he decided to stage his own biathlon, and he enlisted the help of a friend, Don Shanahan. Shanahan suggested that a bicycle stage be added. The pair got the support of the San Diego Track Club, which announced a "Run, Cycle, Swim Triathlon" to be held on Sept. 25, 1974. The event was so successful that Johnstone and Shanahan decided to hold three more of them in 1975. In the meantime, the Coronado, CA, Optimists Club also sponsored a triathlon. It was the Ironman, though, that really caught the public eye and led to a major explosion of the new sport. John Collins, a U. S. Navy officer who competed in that first triathlon, took the idea to Hawaii, where he combined three major endurance races, the 3.8-kilometer Waikiki Rough Water Swim, the 180-kilometer Around-Oahu Bike Race and the 42.195-kilometer Honolulu Marathon, into a single event known as the Ironman Triathlon.
