Who are we Swimming has been part of the games since the beginning of the modern Olympiad in 1896, but the first two games were rather quirky aquatic affairs and exclusively male. The first was a 100 meters race between three Greek sailors across the Bay of Zea that started with the rivals jumping from rowing boat. The winner was Ioannis Malokins in 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The backstroke was introduced in Paris and breaststroke surfaced as an Olympic stroke in 1908. In 1956 in Melbourne that butterfly was born at the Olympic games. The first indication of the modern race progamme emerged in St. Louis, in 1904. Yet there were still no women, who raced for the first time in the 1912 Games of Stockholm. Swimming soon became one of the glamour events of the Olympic Games. The early glamour of the sport opened up vast opportunities to the likes of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, and who won 1912and 1920 100 meters freestyle titles. Johnny Weissmuller, the American who became the first to swim faster than a minute for 100 meters freestyle. In 1932, Buster Crabbe got his passport to Hollywood in the same way He won the 400 meters freestyle by what he described as the tenth of a second that changed my life. Searching for Home?

Search Inventors The History of Swimming Pools By Mary Bellis Swimming as an organized activity goes back as far as 2500 B.C. in ancient Egypt and later in ancient Greece, Rome, and Assyria. In Rome and Greece, swimming was part of the education of elementary age boys and the Romans built the first pools (separate from bathing pools). The first heated swimming pool was built by Gaius Maecenas of Rome in the first century BC. Gaius Maecenas was a rich Roman lord and considered one of the first patron of arts - he supported the famous poets Horace, Virgil, and Propertius, making it possible for them to live and write without fear of poverty. However, swimming pools did not became popular until the middle of the 19th century. By 1837, six indoor pools with diving boards were built in London, England. After the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 and swimming races were among the original events, the popularity of swimming pools began to spread - Reference Britannica

Ian Lentz Makes SCL Swimming History Ian Lentz makes SCL swimming history. May 5, 2004. Casa Grande HighSchool super swimmer Ian Lentz is a master of all trades or http://www.arguscourier.com/sports/news/ianlentz040505.html
Extractions: Ian Lentz makes SCL swimming history May 5, 2004 Casa Grande High School super swimmer Ian Lentz is a master of all trades or at least all events within his chosen trade. Lentz is the first North Bay League swimmer ever to qualify for North Coast Section (NCS) competition in all 11 events. He isn't yet sure which two events he will enter, but one is certain to be the 100-yard backstroke, an event he won in the NCS meet last season as a sophomore. He was also fourth in the 100-yard butterfly last year. Qualifying for all events was a goal at the start of the season for Lentz. Now he has another. "I want to win both events at NCS." He would also like to lead a Casa Grande relay team to victory. High School is only part of what is for Lentz a year-round sport, avocation and profession. He has been swimming competitively since he was six years old and acknowledges that his time is spent, "mainly just swimming." While he is now concentrating on finishing big for Casa Grande this season, Lentz also swims for Twin Valley Aquatics and has hopes of qualifying for the AAU Senior Nationals. It is a goal he is fast approaching.
