Scandinavian R5B Section 2/Spring 2003 Instructors: Nichole Sterling and Kendra Willson MWF 10:10-11:00/Dwinelle 243 Course Description In this course we will examine the various ways in which the Vikings were represented by medieval Scandinavians and by those who were on the other end of their Viking activities. What kind of people were the Vikings? Is their reputation deserved? In attempting to arrive at answers to these questions, we will consider some Norse sagas and poems, as well as a selection of stories, poetry, and chronicle accounts from other European countries ranging from Ireland to Russia. All of the reading for this course will be in English translation and no prior knowledge of the Vikings or of medieval Scandinavia is expected. Course Goals This course builds on what you have already learned in the Reading and Composition A section. We will continue to practice analytical writing as well as thinking and speaking about texts in a critical way. In addition, this course will focus on creating research papers, including how to locate sources and use them to create an interesting and well-developed research paper. They are interesting in themselves but more so, they have laid the ground for later developments of the 20th century and the contemporary scene. Topics dealt with will be: Germanic traditions and myths; the concept of the Empire (Reich) and the German nation; emergence of a Swiss and Austrian identity; the impact of Lutheran Reformation; war and peace; emergence of the German nationalistic opera with Wagner. Extractions: to ESL College Students Ru Zhang Bradley University More and more ESL (English as a Second Language) students come to the United States for their college education every year. "Researchers estimate that by the year 2000, ESL students will make up more than 25% of the college student population; colleges in some large cities have already reached this percentage" (Belanoff et.al. 211). It is critical that ESL teachers provide them with the kind of language skills they need to be successful in college and their future career. Marianne Celce-Murica has said: Celce-Murica's statement highlights the ongoing debate about grammar in ESL teaching and presents two extreme positions. We should not go to extremes. I have been teaching English as a foreign language in China for more than ten years, and I have been in a Master of Arts program in English for two semesters at Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Having been both an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher and an ESL student, I have developed a more definitive position about the role of English grammar in the teaching and learning of ESL. This paper focuses on whether traditional grammar should be taught to ESL students who come to the U.S. for higher education, and if so, what kind of traditional grammar should be taught and how.

Search Literature: Classic More E-texts Private History of the 'Jumping Frog' Story by Mark Twain Five or six years ago a lady from Finland asked me to tell her a story in our Negro dialect, so that she could get an idea of what that variety of speech was like. I told her one of Hopkinson Smith's Negro stories, and gave her a copy of 'Harper's Monthly' containing it. She translated it for a Swedish newspaper, but by an oversight named me as the author of it instead of Smith. I was very sorry for that, because I got a good lashing in the Swedish press, which would have fallen to his share but for that mistake; for it was shown that Boccaccio had told that very story, in his curt and meagre fashion, five hundred years before Smith took hold of it and made a good and tellable thing out of it. I have always been sorry for Smith. But my own turn has come now. A few weeks ago Professor Van Dyke, of Princeton, asked this question:

Children can learn on their own if we provide teaching materials that provide fun and entertainment. I am informed by friends and supported by their children that Telugu movies of yester years have acted as teachers of Telugu language! Let us not forget that parents are the first teachers and parents can create an atmosphere conducive to learning Telugu at home. And parents can organize a Telugu school in their communities and act as volunteers or recruit someone who is knowledgeable in Telugu to teach Telugu. If they have enough political clout, they can induce their school to include Telugu as part of their childrens curriculum.

Daily __________ And, in gym and composition, we wrote and played basketball have to read a book, and Ive chosen one intentionally written with poor grammar. Its swedish. http://www.geocities.com/monkeybutt87/march02.htm
Extractions: I want to write a book. Now, as we all know, my convictions are certainly not strong enough to actually write and publish a book, but Im curious as to how far I can actually get. Now, Ive never written any story. Like, ever. Ive never... developed characters, thought of a plot, all that crap that you have to do to make a book that - ooh, big deal - people might actually want to read. What have I done? This. This website right here. This is my testament to the fact that I write. At all. You see this, world? I write. Right here. Words, here. Here, Im writing. Now. Here. Yeah, okay. You got it. So, all I need is... characters, a plot, a literary agent, a publisher, and a willing audience. Boy, Im practically set. I woke up this morning, hoping to have a good day. Ill tell you now, it didnt suck. But did it not suck? Well, duh. I just said it didnt. But it wasnt great. I didnt have much to eat. I had one whole wheat cracker with some mascarpone cheese (according to my father, everything cream cheese wants to be when it grows up), and then I went to the bus. Very little happened on the actual ride, and Ive completely forgotten what I did in the morning. Im thinking I talked to Luke, Noah, and Sonya. Yeah, Im pretty sure thats it. Then I went to my locker, and eventually walked around with Nathan and Matt (Chambers), while we talked about absolutely nothing.
