In spite of her deep love for her husband, Catherine accompanied her mother to Rome, where St. Bridget went in 1349. Soon after her arrival in that city Catherine received news of the death of her husband in Sweden. She now lived constantly with her mother, took an active part in St. Bridget's fruitful labours, and zealously imitated her mother's ascetic life. Although the distinguished and beautiful young widow was surrounded by suitors, she steadily refused all offers of marriage. In 1372 St. Catherine and her brother, Birger, accompanied their mother on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land; after their return to Rome St. Catherine was with her mother in the latter's last illness and death. In 1374, in obedience to St. Bridget's wish, Catherine brought back her mother's body to Sweden for burial at Wadstena, of which foundation she now became the head. It was the motherhouse of the Brigittine Order, also called the Order of St. Saviour. Catherine managed the convent with great skill and made the life there one in harmony with the principles laid down by its founder. The following hear she went again to Rome in order to promote the canonization of St. Bridget, and to obtain a new papal confirmation of the order. She secured another confirmation both from Gregory XI (1377) and from Urban VI (1379) but was unable to gain at the time the canonization of her mother, as the confusion caused by the Schism delayed the process. When this sorrowful division appeared she showed herself, like St. Catherine of Siena, a steadfast adherent of the part of the Roman Pope

He was active throughout the region of Strathclyde, south of Glasgow, especially in Renfrewshire (Montague). Died c. 305. Dioscorus was a lector of the church of Kynopolis, Egypt. He was burnt with hot irons and died under torture (Benedictines). In art, Dioscorus has torches applied to his sides. Ouch! (Roeder). Died 971. As the mother of Kings Edwy and Saint Edgar the Peaceful and wife of King Edmund of Wessex (921-46), Saint Elgiva was "the adviser and ennobler of the whole kingdom." On the death of her husband, Elgiva retired to the convent of Shaftesbury, where she ended her days and which is the center of her cultus. William of Malmesbury praised her for her generosity, wise counsel, and the gift of prophecy. He also wrote about the miracles wrought at her intercession (Benedictines, Farmer, Gill). Extractions: MAGNUS F ANDERSSON was born in Karlskrona on 26th June 1953. He first studied to be a teacher in brass instruments at Stockholm's Music Pedagogical Institute, from which he graduated in 1978. From 1983 to 1990 he studied composition with Daniel Börtz, Lars-Erik Rosell, Bengt-Arne Wallin, Sven-David Sandström and Pär Lindgren. Following the completion of his studies he spent some time in Paris in 1991, where he mostly composed, as well as visiting IRCAM. During this period he composed Under bron under tiden (Under the bridge, over time, 1991) for wind band and percussion, which was his breakthrough work as a composer. Another celebrated piece was the Förändringsfanfar (Variable Fanfare), a small piece for each day of the year, written for brass duo and commissioned by the Stockholm Cultural Capital of Europe 1998, where the work was performed each day that year. Andersson also composes electroacoustic music. Andersson himself says that he tries to maintain a completely open attitude to composing. He establishes strict rules, admittedly, but at the same time he permits himself to break them occasionally. He also attempts to stretch his material with new forms, such as interactive music, for example, where the composition consists more of computer-programming than musical notes. One example of this is

Extractions: Born on 19th April 1934 in Härnösand. He was a dixieland jazz trombonist in Stockholm in the 1950's. He studied composition with Lars-Erik Larsson and Karl-Birger Blomdahl at the State Academy of Music in Stockholm. He has also studied with György Ligeti, who was a frequent guest lecturer at the Academy during the early sixties. Edgar Varèse and the San Francisco school are also important sources of inspiration. He travelled to the Far East in 1965. Jan Bark's name is still primarily associated with the "Kulturkvartetten" (Culture Quartet) which was engaged in much pioneer work during the 1960's. It introduced new techniques of playing, included musical theatre as an important ingredient in concerts, and presented music that both satirized and criticized the musical scene's conventions of the time. The Kulturkvartetten consisted of four trombones and Bolos for 4 trombones (1963), written by Bark and another member of the quartet, Folke Rabe, was perhaps its most debated composition. These two composers collaborated on a number of occasions and provide a rare example of a successful partnership. Apollinaris was the first bishop of Ravenna, Italy. According to his late and unreliable acta , he was a disciple of Saint Peter and a native of Antioch, who at one time survived a shipwreck in Dalmatia, was driven from his see three times, went into hiding the fourth time when Emperor Vespasian banished all Christians, and was discovered and beaten by a mob. But nothing is known with certainty about himeven the date of his death is debatable. Saint Bede's martyrology reports that he governed Ravenna for 20 years and was killed during Vespasian's reign. Some say he was repeatedly tortured for the faith and to have died in the process. But he may be a martyr only because he suffered for Christ; he may not have died of it.
