Extractions: An act of backwardness and criminality that cannot be justified through any social phenomena be it cultural, religious or royal institutions, has befallen three young women in Swaziland; one believed to be 15 years another believed to be 18 years and the third's age not confirmed. I want to address the dynamics of this angering issue, of abduction, both as a Swazi and also as a human being. This is not the first time the King has committed such crimes and in the past he has done so because the parents of the girls have been complacent on the issue partly because when your daughter marries the King it means more economic wealth and status, and because the institution of the monarchy through its oppressive and coercive nature has instilled fear to the hearts of the Swazi people. At whose financial cost is the King doing this? We as young Swazis are denied chances of schooling because of unaffordable education, yet the taxes of our parents are meant to feed the kids and wives of the King. Swaziland is a small nation, a quarter of which is HIV/AIDS infected due to literacy and lack of health infrastructure, yet we have the head of state committed to creating an empire at the expense of an already economically bleeding nation.

Extractions: SWAZILAND The Swazi people is a Bantu speaking community predominantly from the Ngunis. They are originally from the East Central Africa who settled in the southern Tongaland while expanding southwards after crossing the Limpopo river in the 15th century. After many years the clan moved towards the Pongola river area. Later on, shortage of land and economic pressures brought two groups (Ngunis and Ndwandwe) to blows. After the battle the Swazi's retreated to what is today the central Swaziland. Actually Swaziland has a population of approximately 1 Million habitants and a area of 17.360 sq.Km, with a bicameral parliament consisting of 65 members (55 elected by secret ballot and 10 appointed by the king). In Swaziland we are afraid of this" Steven Cohen is told during his Queer Performance Art in Swaziland. ccording to President Thabo Mbeki, this millennium stood on the verge of the African Renaissance. I thought about that a lot in planning a New Year's Eve performance art work. I have so little connection to tradition and custom, to ancestors and worship, to sangomas and to the soil itself, that I feel like a person in Africa more than like an African. That's very untrendy for a wendy to confess, but honesty says fuck you! to expected lies. I actually feel like a white queer limping into the African Renaissance with much foreboding. I expressed that in two works made this New Year in a traditional homestead in eSigangeni, Swaziland, my adopted other home with the family of my African granny Nomsa Dhlamini. I've always believed in shitting on my own doorstep, as well as on yours. It was a wild New Year, made much more so by queer issues raised by my performance art. I got called a magician, a champion, but mostly

Extractions: I travelled to Southern Africa for three weeks this winter to conduct several programs in participatory democracy and civic education under the auspices of the U.S. Information Agency. This trip, as well as the CIVITAS Africa conference being held in Pretoria this month, are part of an effort to strengthen emerging democracies or provide an opening wedge where democracy is not yet emerging. In each country I saw examples of both participatory pro blem-solving and authoritarian styles of governance. I saw indigenous forms of democracy and adaptations of Western systems. Swaziland I was invited to be a presenter at an NGO conference on strengthening civil society and democratic participation in the Kingdom of Swaziland. Other than a small border with Mozambique, this tiny country is entirely surrounded by South Africa. The Swazis live in almost magical protection in their mountainous, peaceful, culturally homogeneous, and relatively prosperous kingdom, but they lack a constitution and any guarantee of human rights. I worked with the conference organizersan umbrella group of NGOs who ranged from aid organizations to activist unions and civil rights groupsto shape the agenda by e-mail for several months before the conference. This was done through the USIS office in the capital Mbabane, and the planning process was, in itself, a n exercise in practicing participatory democracy.
