We as young Swazis are denied chances of schooling because of unaffordable education, yet the taxes of our parents are meant to feed the kids and wives of the King. Swaziland is a small nation, a quarter of which is HIV/AIDS infected due to literacy and lack of health infrastructure, yet we have the head of state committed to creating an empire at the expense of an already economically bleeding nation.

Extractions: FIVE DAY OPTION Day 1. Drive to the Kruger National Park, arriving in time for a picnic lunch. Spend the afternoon on a game drive, returning at sunset to the restcamp. This trip, as well as the CIVITAS Africa conference being held in Pretoria this month, are part of an effort to strengthen emerging democracies or provide an opening wedge where democracy is not yet emerging. In each country I saw examples of both participatory pro blem-solving and authoritarian styles of governance. I saw indigenous forms of democracy and adaptations of Western systems. Swaziland I was invited to be a presenter at an NGO conference on strengthening civil society and democratic participation in the Kingdom of Swaziland. Other than a small border with Mozambique, this tiny country is entirely surrounded by South Africa. The Swazis live in almost magical protection in their mountainous, peaceful, culturally homogeneous, and relatively prosperous kingdom, but they lack a constitution and any guarantee of human rights. I worked with the conference organizersan umbrella group of NGOs who ranged from aid organizations to activist unions and civil rights groupsto shape the agenda by e-mail for several months before the conference. This was done through the USIS office in the capital Mbabane, and the planning process was, in itself, a n exercise in practicing participatory democracy.
