They are nocturnal and are extremely social; sugar gliders should not be maintained as solitary pets. They do have a membrane connecting the fifth (outer) digit with the ankle on each side, and may glide up to 150 feet. Life span is 9 to 12 years in captivity. Minimum size of an enclosure for sugar gliders is 6 feet wide by 6 feet long, and about 6 feet high. A nesting or sleeping box resembling a hole in a tree should be provided. An external heat source is necessary to maintain sugar gliders at an ambient temperature of greater than 75 degrees F. Sugar gliders reach sexual maturity at about 10 months of age for females, and about 12 months of age for males. They breed throughout the year and produce two litters of two offspring each yearly, on average. Gestation length is brief, as with all marsupials, but the joeys stay in the pouch until about 100 days after breeding, and are weaned at about 130 days. In the wild, sugar gliders eat insects, spiders, and plant nectar. Captive sugar gliders should be fed an insectivore diet as 50% of their total diet. Commercial diets exist (Reliable Protein Products, Insectivore Diet, Rancho Mirage CA) and live crickets, spiders, moths, waxworms and mealworms, dusted with calcium / mineral powder, can be offered as well. The other 50% of their diet consists of nectar (see recipe below). Adult sugar gliders should get about 1 tablespoon of commercial or live insectivore diet, and about 1 tablespoon of nectar daily. Fresh water always should be available. Treats of chopped mixed fruit may be offered occasionally.

The public shelter shall update this information annually. License Requirements: No person shall operate an animal shelter unless that person holds a valid license issued by the Commissioner pursuant to PACFA and Sections 2.00 and 3.00 of these rules and regulations. The twelve month license period shall commence the first working day of March and must be renewed on or before the first working day of March the following calendar year.
