In the early 19th century, however, French archaeologists discovered that the village indeed deserved its name. Beneath the mosque that was built around Shaykh Yusuf's tomb, a vast temple lay buried. As the temple was excavated the mosque was left intact and is still in use today. Therefore, from ancient times, through the Christian period and into the present this patch of earth has been a place of devout worship.
Amir Khusrau Website: Qawwalis Urdu/Hindi qawaalis by Amir Khusro, a 13th century sufi poet from Delhi. The lyrics are provided in Urdu font (GIFs), as well as in transliterated and translated forms. http://www.angelfire.com/sd/urdumedia/lyrics.html
Extractions: Some qawwalis and folk songs of Khusrau tradition Qawwalis and folk songs, the most popular genres in the Khusrau tradition, have kept his name alive amongst the masses for more than seven centuries. The following popular verses, just like the rest of his Hindvi dohas and riddles , have reached us through oral traditions rather than authentic document sources . There is a strong possibility that some of them may have been composed by much later Qawwals and poets who tried to relate to Khusrau's legendary association with Nizamuddin Aulia. Today you may find differences in words, or sequence of couplets, and even addition of new couplets in their performance or documentation, in two different places. This page contains mostly Urdu / Hindi Qawwalis - other Farsi ghazals of Khusrau that are sung as Qawwali may be found elsewhere . The following have been collected from various sources including transcriptions from actual Qawwali performances. Note that the English translations here - a bit literal - are meant only to guide the readers about the contents of these songs. For a better appreciation of the poetry, knowledge of Urdu/Hindi and even Persian will be an advantage.

Extractions: Osama bin Laden is not a popular character in Central Asia's cultural and religious heartland in the southwest of Uzbekistan. "To kill innocent people violates the principles of Islam," says a local imam . "Why doesn't he order his own army to fight the army of the infidels?" Bin Laden is an Arab Wahhabi from Saudi Arabia. The people of Bukhara are substantially Tajik, and most speak Tajik, although calling themselves Uzbek. This means that they are culturally oriented towards Persia. Bukhara - as well as the larger city of Samarkand - are not in present-day Tajikistan because of Joseph Stalin's warped mapmaking. Ever since the 9th and 10th centuries, as capital of the Samanid empire, Bukhara has been annexed to the fabulous Persian artistic heritage. And ever since the 14th century, it has been a privileged home of Sufism, a more mystic branch of Islam. Islam Karimov, the current ruler of Uzbekistan, is also not a very popular character in Bukhara - according to prominent local merchant families. But the reason is not religious, it is because of his government's corruption and inefficiency. Last week, Karimov and entourage travelled in style to Bukhara, to reopen the meticulously restored birthplace and tomb complex dedicated to 14th century Sufi saint Bahauddin Naqshbandi - the founder of the most important Sufi

Search Alternative Religions Winged Heart of the Sufi order Thewinged heart is a symbol of the Sufi movement, a mystic branch of Islam. The symbol is a heart with wings, symbolizing ascension; the five pointed star represents divine light, the moon responsiveness to this light. the symbol was chosen by the founder of the Sufi Order, Hazrat Inayat Khan. Here is his description of the symbol, from the Gatha The Symbol of the Sufi Order Then the crescent in the heart suggests the responsiveness of the heart. The crescent represents the responsiveness of the crescent to the light of the sun, for naturally it receives the light, which develops it until it becomes the full moon. The principal teaching of Sufism is that of learning to become a pupil. For it is the pupil who has a chance of becoming a teacher. Once a person considers that he is a teacher his responsiveness is gone. The greatest teachers of the world have been the greatest pupils. And it is this principle which is represented by the crescent. The crescent in the heart represents that the heart, responsive to the light of God, is illuminated.

Extractions: " This next session can be enjoyed without concern about its deeper meanings. If you wish, for example, you can imagine that these stories ... are not about you. But if it were a teaching session, your task might be to identify yourself in every story, to acknowledge that you too could be as foolish or as lacking in discernment as the characters in these ... tales." [From "Human Nature" April 1978 ] One woman says to another, "Poor Maisie really has suffered for what she believes in." "She believes that you can wear a size six shoe on a size nine foot." A friend of mine once went to see the chief of state of a certain country. When they were walking on the grounds of the presidential place, a large and fierce-looking dog tore the loincloth off a Hindu guru who was also present and, barking loudly, cornered him by a wall. Now this guru had the reputation of being able to tame tigers with a glance, but he obviously had no such way with dogs, and he called out to my friend to do something.

Sufism In the sufi tradition it is written that the absolute Spirit said And I breathed My Spirit into humanity. We are each enlivened by this inbreath. http://www.allaboutturkey.com/sufi.htm
Extractions: Sufism is a way of life in which a deeper identity is discovered and lived. This deeper identity, or essential Self, is beyond the already known personality and is in harmony with everything that exists. It has abilities of awareness, action, creativity, and love that are far beyond those of the superficial personality. Eventually it is understood that these abilities belong to a greater Being that we each individualize in our own unique way while never being separate from it. "Since in order to speak, learn to speak by listening." Rumi , Mathnawi (Mesnevi), I, I627 The essential Self is an objective reality, but it cannot be known in a state of sleep, any more than the ordinary facts of reality can be known in a dream. In the Sufi tradition it is written that the absolute Spirit said And I breathed My Spirit into humanity. We are each enlivened by this in-breath. The essential Self, the soul, can be understood as this individualization of Spirit. The soul, however, is such a fine and subtle energy that it can be obscured by coarser energies of our existence, the energies of thought, desire, instinct, and sensation. These are the veils over the essential Self, the substances of intoxication that numb us to our essential Self. If your thought is a rose
