How The Market Made Us Stupid States and Japan are about to teach the world much stronger position precisely because its stock markets (except in of a club in which economic activity is not http://www.commondreams.org/views01/0318-03.htm
Extractions: by Will Hutton Four trillion dollars is a lot of money. It is the entire annual output of Britain and France put together. It is also the amount American investors in high-tech shares have lost over the past 12 months - and that's before their losses in the rest of the stock market. The entire rickety American economic success story has rested on a crazy stock market boom so that even taxi drivers were trading in dot.com stocks and running up unparalleled levels of debt because they felt so wealthy. Now they are left, like the rest of America, with the debts and worthless stocks. And the crisis in the American financial system is matched by one in Japan. Japan's massive financial bubble burst 10 years ago and it has yet to clear up the financial detritus. The banking system is racked by up to $350 billion of bad debts, but the banks' capacity to ride the financial hit is undermined by the downward plunge of the Japanese stock market because their own capital is invested in the shares of other banks - a double whammy which already means many are technically bankrupt. And if we take seriously the hint from Japanese finance minister Kiichi Miyazawa that Japan might be the first major state since the war to unilaterally write down the value of its national debt, its financial system has to be regarded as on the brink. For the world to have one calamity would be bad enough; to have two simultaneously is more than careless.

Extractions: I don't understand why business schools don't teach the Warren Buffett model of investing. Or the Ben Graham model. Or the Peter Lynch model. Or the Martin Whitman model. (I could go on.) In English, you study great writers; in physics and biology, you study great scientists; in philosophy and math, you study great thinkers; but in most business school investment classes, you study modern finance theory, which is grounded in one basic premisethat markets are efficient because investors are always rational. It's just one point of view. A good English professor couldn't get away with teaching Melville as the backbone of English literature. How is it that business schools get away with teaching modern finance theory as the backbone of investing? Especially given that it's only a theory that, as far as I know, hasn't made many investors particularly rich. Meanwhile, Berkshire Hathaway, under the stewardship of Buffett and vice chairman Charlie Munger, has made thousands of people rich over the past 30-odd years. And it has done so with integrity and a system of principles that is every bit as rigorous, if not more so, as anything modern finance theory can dish up. On Monday, 11,000 Berkshire shareholders showed up at Aksarben Stadium in Omaha to hear Buffett and Munger talk about this set of principles. Together these principles form a model for investing to which any well-informed business-school student should be exposedif not for the sake of the principles themselves, then at least to generate the kind of healthy debate that's common in other academic fields.

The grant will bring more than 4,000 new students into the program. Cabrera Capital Markets, Inc. is an investment-banking and institutional brokerage firm that executes securities transactions for pension funds, financial institutions, municipalities, corporations, foundations, and endowments. The SMG Program is an innovative way to help educators teach the fundamentals of saving and investing within such core curriculum subjects as math, social studies, and language arts, said Donna C. Peterman, the foundations chairman and senior vice president, PNC Financial Services Group. Martins gift will help sharpen the research, verbal, and writing skills of Chicago students many of whom would not otherwise have this additional educational resource. Cabreras gift will fund student participation and teacher workshops in the program. Cabrera is actively involved with the New America Alliance, an American Latino business initiative organized on the principle that American Latino business leaders have the responsibility to lead the process of building the forms of capital most crucial for Latino progress financial literacy, economic capital, political capital, human capital, and the practice of philanthropy.

Extractions: Markets await policy direction Krishnan Thiagarajan P HEW! What a week it was? Be it the merry go-round on the political front or the incessant gyrations of the stock market, it was, by any yardstick, a week with few parallels in Indian history. Clearly, the FUD factor was at play, in all its dimensions; the "fear, uncertainty and doubt" that policymaking process in key sectors by a Congress-led coalition government, with support from the Left parties, may be turned on its head. This factor wreaked havoc at the market. In a single trading session on Monday, the Sensex witnessed the highest intra-day fall in the history of the BSE, index-based circuit filters came into play for the first time, halting trading twice during the day and even at the end of the day, the Sensex suffered the second biggest decline in its history. Right noises from Dr Manmohan Singh, then PM-designate, SEBI, and the RBI and buying by domestic institutions and mutual funds went a long way in calming the frayed nerves of operators in a panic-stricken market. As it also became evident that no payment crisis was brewing, the markets staged a swift comeback. The Sensex which was staring at a 15 per cent loss in the first few hours of trading on Monday, clawed back from the brink to end the week with a mere 2.1 per cent decline.

What is an environmental nonprofit to do when faced with uncertainty on a major scale? Below are some tips to help your organization weather the current storm and face future turbulence. Despite the current economic situation and recent tragedies, you have a job to do, and it is no less important today than it was prior to 9/11. The critical thing is to focus on the task at hand, your core mission. Since no one can do twenty things at once and be successful, consider shifting non-core services to organizations where they are core and review and reduce mission creep, non-core activities and pet projects. Objectively review the strengths and weaknesses of your organization with staff and board members. Decide which projects define your mission and shelve work which is not critical to your goals. Look within yourself for ways to weather the storm, but dont stop there. One person cannot bring an organization out of the rough alone. Leadership and innovation can be found in your board members, co-workers, volunteers, donors, interns, and others. Utilize all of these resources because every new idea will help move your organization further away from the hurricanes eye.
