Originally Wilton was a part of Norwalk. In 1726 Wilton became its own parish and in 1802 was granted a Town Charter by the state. Wilton was named after a town by the same name in England; where many of the original settlers emigrated from. Wilton covers 26.8 square miles with a population of 16,500. US Route 7 and Connecticut Routes 33 and 106 run through town and the Danbury Branch of the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven line stops in 2 locations, Cannondale and Wilton Center. Wilton is about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of New York City. The Wilton Fire & Rescue Department provides 24-hour fire, rescue, emergency medical aid, and hazardous material mitigation from two fire stations. Fire Headquarters is located at 236 Danbury Road (US 7) in the "Town Hall Complex." And Station 2 is at 707 Ridgefield Road (CT RT. 33) in North Wilton.
