Extractions: National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT) Tuesday, October 21, 2003 www.collegeboard.com This is a test administered to the sophomore and junior class in preparation for taking the SAT in the spring of his junior year. The test questions are very similar to the style of questions that students will encounter on the SAT. The true value in taking the PSAT is the information that can be gleaned from a student's performance. In December, the results will be explained to the students in class. Each student receives a score sheet that indicates how he answered on each question, the level of difficulty of each questions and the content of each math question. Additionally, the student's original test booklet will be handed back so that he can analyze his performance on each question. With this information, we can determine what areas need work before taking the SAT. Juniors who score in the 98 th percentile or higher have the opportunity to earn recognition and scholarship money through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. All students have the option of submitting their names, addresses, characteristics and interests to be distributed to colleges looking for students that fit a particular profile. PSAT scores are used to determine Honors/AP placement (along with the grade in the current 10 th th -grade course and the current teacher's recommendation) for junior/senior year classes.

There are two of these tests: The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) and the American College Test Assessment (ACT). Both the SAT I and the ACT are offered several times a year. These tests are administered locally at any number of schools in the Greater Cincinnati area. Elder is a testing center for only the SAT. Applications and practice tests are available in the Guidance Resource Center. However, registration is THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT! Registration can be done by mail, by phone (which has an additional cost), or on the internet (click at the top of the page for SAT and ACT web sites). Once these tests are taken, students are responsible for sending all scores directly to any colleges or appropriate agencies (the SAT or ACT registration materials will ask you which schools you would like to send your information to). Some colleges, universities, and agencies (NCAA Clearinghouse, scholarships programs, etc.) require direct delivery of test scores from the testing agency. The guidance department suggests that students take each type of test two times; once in the Spring of the Junior year and in the Fall of the Senior year. Most colleges combine the highest verbal and highest math scores, regardless of the test date. Thus, retaking these tests does not penalize the student! Please check the policies regarding standardized tests in the admission process with your prospective colleges.

Extractions: March 1998 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Taking a college entrance exam can be one of the most stressful times in a student's life, but a Purdue University expert says it doesn't have to be. Doug Christiansen, director of Purdue's Office of Admissions, says taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) does not have to be a nerve-racking experience. Test results from the SAT and ACT are one of the tools colleges and universities use to determine which students to admit. "Everyone can set themselves up for success on these tests," Christiansen says. "However, you can't spend a week cramming, go to bed early the night before, eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test and expect to have fabulous success. The best preparation happens over time." He suggests: Taking college preparation courses (English, math and science) during all four years of high school. "Stay in academic courses throughout your high school career," Christiansen says. "Even if you've fulfilled your school's graduation requirements, keep taking solid college prep classes. Continuing to improve your reading comprehension and critical thinking skills will do nothing but help you when test time rolls around."

Extractions: Testing Information Throughout one's education, a student will take numerous standardized tests. In high school, this continues. These tests can help students understand more about themselves, suggest where they need possible extra assistance, provide an idea on how they compare to others across the nation, and even supply possible career options. Regardless of the examination, to best help the student, each should be taken seriously. The following examinations, and a brief description of each, are given at Bartlett High School: PLAN The PLAN test is taken in October of sophomore year. This examination is useful for establishing further academic and career goals, as it tests students on both math and English areas, as well as matching students up with possible career paths based on their interests. The PLAN test is a pre-ACT test and provides a predictable ACT score based on the results. Students can also see how they performed compared to students across the nation, including those college-bound. Results will be shared in class by a counselor in late Winter or early Spring. PSAT

Extractions: Standardized Tests The standardized tests used for college planning (PSAT) and admission (SAT and ACT) will be changing slightly in format and content for the Class of 2006. The PSAT has already added a multiple-choice writing component to prepare students for the change in the SAT format to be instituted in March 2005. There will be no more analogy questions and there will be more reading passages to test critical reading and vocabulary in context. The mathematics sections will no longer include quantitative comparison questions. More content from Algebra II will be added. A third score will be given in Writing which will come from sections of multiple-choice questions on the writing process and a 25-minute writing sample. There will be three scores (Critical Reading, Math, and Writing) all on a 200-800 scale. The Critical Reading and Math scores should be equivalent to the Verbal and Math scores on the current test. Scores from the current and new tests can also be used to get the best combination of verbal and math scores. The SAT-II in Writing will most likely be phased out after the new Writing section is added.
