Extractions: ABOUT THE P.S.A.T The Preliminary Student Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT-NMSQT) is given in the 10th grade for practice and then is used as a qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship program in the 11th grade. The PSAT is a two-hour version of the SAT I and measures verbal, writing, and mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. All 10th and 11th grade students are registered by Lovett to take the exam. ABOUT THE SAT I The Student Assessment Test I (SAT I) is a three-hour multiple-choice test that measures the verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities you have developed over many years, both in and out of school. Your SAT I scores, grades, course selection, and other information about your academic background help college admissions officers evaluate how well prepared you are to do college-level work. Most colleges now affirm that they see the strength of your transcript (i.e., how challenging the courses you've chosen to take) and your grade point average as far better predictors of college performance than standardized test scores. Since courses and grading standards vary widely from high school to high school, however, scores on standardized tests, such as SAT I and the ACT, help colleges compare the ability of students from different schools.

Guidance and counseling programs promote school success through a focus on academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, advocacy, social/emotional, and career development. (American School Counselor Association, 1997.) The Revised Guidance and Counseling Curriculum provides a framework for standards as to what a quality school counseling program should contain, as well as serving as an organizational guide for developing appropriate competencies for student success. The curriculum provides the standards as the acknowledged criteria used to make judgments about the adequacy and structure of the program, and a sufficient number of program standards should be written to represent a good guidance model.

Welcome to the Seneca Valley 7-8 Middle School Guidance Page SENECA VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL TESTING/ASSESSMENT Standardized Testing usually takes place in the spring of the year in late March or early April. Grade 7 Grade 7 The Stanford Achievement Test is a norm-referenced achievement test. This means your child's scores describe how he or she did on the test compared with other students in the same grade from across the nation who took the test at about the same time in the school year. Students cannot pass or fail a test such as the Stanford. Nor are results used to assign marks or grades. Test results give educators an objective picture of how your child or the typical child in a specific grade is progressing in school. Scores can help to show whether a student is doing better in some subjects than in others and whether a student is improving in certain areas from year to year. The complete battery is administered to all seventh graders. Specific tests include Reading, Mathematics, Language, Spelling, Study Skills, Listening, Science, and Social Studies.

Extractions: Equity Center Publications and Resources Educate America: A Call for Equity in School Reform We believe that neither excellence nor equity in education can be achieved as long as student assessment instruments, policies and practices limit opportunities to learn and narrow or dilute curricula and instruction. Both excellence and equity goals can, on the other hand, be served by assessments that help teachers to identify students' strengths as well as their needs and to determine the most appropriate and effective means of helping them to learn and grow. Standardized tests have a disproportionate impact on students, teachers and curriculum in schools that serve low income and minority students (Mitchell 1992; Tate 1993). Some widely found effects that are of particular consequence for equity in education are reviewed briefly below. A substantial share of U.S. schools engage in ability grouping or tracking of students beginning at the elementary and middle grade levels according to presumed ability levels. As a number of studies have shown, tracking almost always means that those pupils who need the most support to raise their performance levels get the least, while those who need it the least have it showered on them. The consequence is a two tiered system of education characterized by the following conditions.
