Extractions: Schools that add value: raising standards in mathematics Howard Tanner, Sonia Jones and Mike Treadaway Paper presented at the British Educational Research Association Conference, University of Sussex, at Brighton, 2-5 September, 1999. Abstract This research aimed to draw together evidence from across five LEAs to identify strategies and factors which have a significant and measurable impact on attainment in mathematics. Value added analyses which linked national curriculum and GCSE data to a range of input measures were used to identify schools where pupils achieved standards significantly higher than would have been expected from their prior attainment. Factors contributing to this high attainment were then identified through extended interviews with LEA advisors, head teachers, subject leaders and classroom teachers. Further data was collected at classroom level through participant observation. Introduction This paper describes some of the results of one strand of a collaborative project 'Setting Targets to Raise Standards'. The project is funded by the Welsh Assembly, led by the Vale of Glamorgan and involves 5 Welsh LEAs and the University of Wales Swansea. The project was built around earlier work by the Vale of Glamorgan involving the development of value-added analyses linking National Curriculum data to prior attainment scores, and the development of an approach to target setting based on pupil level data. The project was multi-faceted and included strands, which are not reported on here, relating to the development and validation of pupil centered approaches to target setting and the impact of differing forms of data analysis and presentation. This paper reports on the strand of the project entitled 'Improving Standards in Numeracy' which drew together evidence from 20 particularly successful schools in the 5 LEAs to identify factors and strategies which appeared to contribute positively towards standards in numeracy and mathematics. This paper focusses on features at the level of classroom practice, making only brief mention of factors at the level of whole school and subject leader.

Within the requirement to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, schools may put particular emphases on some subjects or approaches in the curriculum for some pupils. There are no nationally prescribed time allowances for national curriculum subjects. For example: One school enhances modern foreign languages for some pupils in year 7 so that it can introduce a second foreign language in year 8. A primary school emphasises the arts throughout years 4 and 5 by using wide-ranging projects, often community-based, to develop pupils' creative thinking, confidence in taking initiative, basic skills and aspects of subject-specific learning. Programmes of study set out what the majority of pupils should be taught by the end of the key stage. It is not necessary for pupils to study all national curriculum subjects each week, term or year. A school may decide to concentrate on particular subjects or aspects of the curriculum during a particular term or year. As long as the full programme of study is covered by the end of the key stage, it is up to the school to decide the time weighting in any particular term or year. For example: Pupils completing the key stage 1 programme of study early may join the science activities of older classes or work with a classroom assistant or volunteer on independent investigations individually or as a small group.

The GCSE Mathematics results were a little above the national average, but the school thought it could improve them by using additional resources and ideas to stimulate and stretch gifted students. Two years ago, following a comment from an inspection report, the school made a concerted effort to provide extension activities for key stage 3 pupils in the top two sets, both in class and for homework. It did this by pooling ideas from all mathematics staff. Many of the activities were based on increasing the everyday relevance of material and making mathematics more fun. Master classes after school proved very successful because of the problem-solving and games approach to the subject. Top of page The school realised that extension activities were also needed at key stage 4, to stretch and stimulate the more able students. Ideas were pooled and a range of activities were added to the schemes of work, particularly for the top two sets. Gifted students were encouraged to enter the European Kanga Competition and the UK Mathematics Challenge, several emerging triumphantly with gold certificates. This raised the self-esteem of the whole cohort and made many feel that mathematics could be a passport to lifelong success. 'Mathematics can make you fly' was the catchphrase.
