Extractions: The multi-island country of St Vincent and the Grenadines is a land of contrasts. St Vincent - the main population centre - is mountainous and lush. Rainforests thrive in the interior and La Soufrie, an active volcano, dominates the north of the island. Of the numerous islands and cays that make up the Grenadines, Mustique, Palm Island and Union Island have become popular with the rich and famous - yachting, diving in the islands' deep blue waters and enjoying their beaches. However, their playgrounds are worlds away from the third of the population without jobs. OVERVIEW FACTS LEADERS MEDIA Like other Windward Islands, St Vincent and the Grenadines faces the challenge of having to reduce its reliance on bananas following a European Union decision in 1999 to phase out preferential treatment to producers from former colonies at the expense of Latin American growers - mostly US corporations. The islands' family-run farms will find it difficult to compete. While it has tried to diversify the economy, mainly by promoting tourism, its efforts have been only partially successful, and bananas continue to account for nearly half of export earnings.

He is now Industrial Arts, Science and Physical Education teacher at that same institution whose name has been changed to the Bequia Community High School. Belmar recently undertook an expedition, which carried him almost around the world. He returned home from Palau in the Pacific via Manila, Los Angeles, New York, San Juan, Canouan, back to Barbados before arriving at the E.T. Joshua airport. Belmar was taking part in a UNESCO sponsored Inter-regional conference. This was through a Small Islands Voice Youth Forum. Belmar is hoping to get other schools linked up to the programme in areas of sustainable development. By 2004 the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States is scheduled to be reviewed. Belmar's attendance at Palau went some way to broadening St. Vincent and the Grenadines' participation in this exercise.

Extractions: Radio in St.Vincent and the Grenadines started as a private enterprise, operated from the Kingstown residence of Mr. Weston Lewis, an Amateur (Ham) Radio Operator - , who chose to start broadcasting in the early 1950s. His broadcast continued until 1957 when St.Vincent signed onto the Windward Islands Broadcasting Service - WIBS , which began in neighboring Grenada in 1954. WIBS was a short-wave radio network that linked the four Windward Islands (St.Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica and St. Lucia) by short-wave transmitters for special programming and News following which each Island transmitted its own local programming. When this system was dismantled, the government of St.Vincent and the Grenadines took full responsibility for radio and established Radio St.Vincent and the Grenadines. With this move came the setting up of new studios and facilities at Richmond Hill, in the capital Kingstown in May 1977. This replaced the outdated WIBS NBC Radio St.Vincent and the Grenadines, still known to many older listeners as

The change will depend on my getting a site that will handle 100 megabites of pictureswithout being too expensive. In the meantime I am operating a bloggish journal at http://karlek.diaryland.com that will give advance looks at new material. In the winter of 1993-4 Sally and I visited St. Vincent for the first time. It was not our first visit to the Caribbean: we had been coming down for a couple of weeks every winter after we discovered that the warmth and sunlight helped us get through the New England winters more easily. But we had not visited St. Vincent because their tourist market seemed to be the people who owned or rented yachts; and that was a different ambiance than we were interested in. But finally Sally, who is the gardener in the family, pointed out that St. Vincent also had the oldest Botanical Garden in the hemisphere, so we tried it out. We were so pleased that we returned the following winter and in the spring of 1995 we bought a house. We have spent the winter there every year since.
