Extractions: By Pamela Caywood This month we thought it would be fun to learn about Saint Patrick and eat an Irish meal as a family night activity. A pre-packaged evening what more could you ask for? So, we will give you some of the background of why this man is a Saint. If you want more information search the internet for Saint Patrick. There is a lot of information to be found. Saint Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland. His parents were Romans but they lived in Britain. As a teenager, Saint Patrick was kidnapped and taken to Ireland. He was sold into slavery and eventually became a shepherd for a landowner. This job was difficult, braving the elements and enduring the long hours, but he found peace each day through praying to God. He developed a strong relationship with God and knew that someday his life would improve. Sure enough, one day God told him it was time to go back to Britain. He escaped by boat. He eventually made it back to his relatives in Britain and then traveled through Europe trying to determine the path for his life. He decided that his life should be God centered so he entered the priesthood. He was ordained a priest and then a bishop. He was sent to Ireland in 433 to teach Christianity. He converted thousands of Irishmen and built many churches during his 40 years stay. He died on March 17 461 and that is why we now celebrate Saint Patrick's day on March 17 every year.

Extractions: S T. P A T R I C K' S D A Y by Patricia R. Chadwick Since many stories and legends have been told regarding St. Patrick it is difficult to separate the facts from the myths. We do know, however, that Patrick was born around 387 AD in Roman Britain. His father was a magistrate and Patrick, as his name implies, was of noble birth , (those of more noble rank among the Romans were called Patricians). When he was sixteen, Patrick was carried off by a band of Irish raiders and was made a slave in Ireland. Here he became a shepherd and served his master faithfully. While spending long and often lonely days in the forests or hills with his sheep, his love for God grew stronger and his faith increased. After six years, Patrick was set free and allowed to return home to his family, who had given him up for dead. While in Ireland, Patrick had become a devout young man. Upon returning home, Patrick felt the call of God on his life and he prepared himself to become a priest. Though he was thankful that he was able to return home, he couldn't seem to forget Ireland. It is said that while he was in Britainny Patrick had a vision, comparable to the one that St. Paul, saw before he went to preach the gospel in Europe. He saw someone making signs to him to come over and preach and teach the people of Ireland.

Extractions: Section 3 St. Patrick's Day is one Holiday that is Celebrated in Ireland and America! Not many cultural Holidays are celebrated outside of the original country that it came from. In America St.Patrick's Day is celebrated by the wearing of green, parades, and the dying of beer to the color green! Children look forward to this holiday because it is fun. Watch out ~ If you do not wear green you might get pinched! St. Patrick wasn't born in Ireland but in Scotland, in the year 387. He was captured at the young age of 16 and was made a slave in Ireland. Soon after his capture he had a vision from God. His relationship with God became his strength to endure his 6 years of slavery. One night God gave him a vision that a boat was ready to take him back to Scotland, and he escaped on faith to find the boat. He returned home to happy parents who rejoiced at his return! Soon Patrick realized that God was calling him to go back to Ireland to spread the word of God. So he set out to get a Christian education. Patrick wasn't his given name at birth, but given to him much later in life by Pope Celestine. It is recorded that St. Patrick's given name was Maewyn Succat. Patrick returned to Ireland as the Bishop of Ireland. He understood the slaves and common folk of Ireland and was used by God mightly. Despite the constant threat to his life, Patrick traveled widely, baptizing, confirming, preaching, building churches, schools, and monasteries. Patrick succeeded in converting almost the entire population of the island.

Extractions: Today we raise a glass of warm green beer to a fine fellow, the Irishman who didn't rid the land of snakes, didn't compare the Trinity to the shamrock, and wasn't even Irish. St. Patrick, who died 1,507, 1,539, or 1,540 years ago todayâdepending on which unreliable source you want to believeâhas been adorned with centuries of Irish blarney. Innumerable folk tales recount how he faced down kings, negotiated with God, tricked and slaughtered Ireland's reptiles. The facts about St. Patrick are few. Most derive from the two documents he probably wrote, the autobiographical Confession and the indignant Letter to a slave-taking marauder named Coroticus. Patrick was born in Britain, probably in Wales, around 385 A.D. His father was a Roman official. When Patrick was 16, seafaring raiders captured him, carried him to Ireland, and sold him into slavery. The Christian Patrick spent six lonely years herding sheep and, according to him, praying 100 times a day. In a dream, God told him to escape. He returned home, where he had another vision in which the Irish people begged him to return and minister to them: "We ask thee, boy, come and walk among us once more," he recalls in the
