Extractions: St. Patrick : The patron saint of Ireland and the Irish, was born about 385 A.D. in Northern Wales. He studied religion in Europe to become a priest and bishop. He then brought Christianity to the Irish by teaching in Ireland for 29 years. According to early Irish tradition, he died on March 17, 461 AD. The anniversary of his death is celebrated as Saint Patrick's Day. St. Patrick is most known around the world as driving all the snakes out of Ireland through trickery. The symbol of shamrocks : An Irish tale tells of how Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day.

I want to congratulate all of the brave men and women who have worked so hard to get the process this far." It is my high honor and personal privilege to have you all here in the United States House of Representatives for this special day. This is the 19th annual St. Patrick's Day Lunch. Started by the late Tip O'Neill, this luncheon is a fitting tribute to the contributions of the Irish to the development of our nation. Our nations' histories are intertwined by the influx of humanity from Ireland, and they continue to be linked by millions of Irish Americans who proudly wear their green every St. Patrick's Day. Of course, history has its own ironies. For example, St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was originally born in England. Ronald Reagan, the patron saint of Republicans born in my district in a town called Dixon was raised a Democrat. Maybe there is a message here that we can all learn. Success comes from understanding the other side. Now, it is more important than ever to understand the other side. In Northern Ireland, the peace process is at a critical stage. I want to congratulate all of the brave men and women who have worked so hard to get the process this far. And we are all concerned about the latest news.

However, while we appreciate that those who arent Irish wish to join in celebrating the day St. Patrick (real name: Patrick McPuke) drove the serpents out of Ireland using only the power of God, a quart of Jameson and weapons-grade irradiated cobalt, the way most people observe St. Patricks Day is offensive and disrespectful. Theres nothing more pathetic than some fat Polack swilling seven Buds mixed with carcinogenic green dye drunkenly arguing that INXS is authentic Irish music just before barfing into a plate of corned beef and cabbage. Lets face it: most people are in no condition to handle the all-day drunk of St. Patricks Day. March 17 Earliest Observance? Demographic Practice? National The origins of St. Patrick's Day and the folklore, fancy, and traditions that give the holiday its many diverse symbols. [click here] Much of the life of St. Patrick , the patron saint of Ireland, has been lost or confused in history. His birthplace, birthdate, and death date are components of much conjecture. Suffice to say, he was not born in Ireland and he lived from any number of different dates between as early as 373 and as late as 492. From these dates he could have lived only a little more than 60 years to more than 120 years. His day of observance is likely neither his birth date nor death date, but rather a date selected for convenience. At the age of 16, he was sold into slavery. He worked as a shepherd for six years before receiving a dream of his escape. From this spiritual awakening, he began a life long journey of divination, leadership, and ecclesiastic responsibility as a Deacon, Priest, and Bishop of Ireland. Not admitting to any miracles in his own writings, many miracles have been attributed to him. In particular a miraculous exploit at Tara against the

Extractions: St Patrick's Day, the festival of the patron saint of Ireland, is celebrated each year on 17 March. Unlike most other national days, St Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world, particularly in the US where people commemorate the day by, amongst other things, colouring rivers and beer green - in Ireland people celebrate it by going green after drinking rivers of beer. St Patrick So who was St Patrick? And why is he so fondly remembered by so many people around the world 1500 years after his death? Legend has it that St Patrick was born Maewyn Succat, to an Anglo-Roman family in Wales, in 415 AD. When he was 16 years of age he was captured by an Irish pagan warlord, Niall of the Nine Hostages, and he spent six miserable years in Ireland until he escaped to France. Maewyn went on to become a priest, changing his name to Patricius, or Patrick, which derives from the Latin for father-figure - other derivations include patrician, patron and patronize. Rather than forgetting his wretched experiences in Ireland, he decided to go back to the country that enslaved him, and he spent his later years preaching Christianity to the Irish, banishing snakes and popularizing the shamrock. He used this three-leaved grass to help explain the Trinity, how God could be three entities (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) yet, at the same time, be one. This is the reason that the shamrock is the national emblem for Ireland.

Extractions: St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, the only definite statement to be made about his birthplace is that it was not in Ireland. He is said to have been born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, Scotland; in a village close to Glastonbury, England; in Monmouthshire, England; in Tours, France; and in Wales. In his Confession , he tells us he was born at Bannavem Taberniae, but just where that was we do not know. He was, as far as anyone has been able to determine, a Britannic Celt, raised a Roman Catholic. The year of his birth is equally confused; A.D. 373, 386, 387, 389, 395, and sometime early in the fifth century have all been advanced as possible birth dates. He seems to have died in either 461 or about 492. One Irish legend states that he died at the age of one hundred twenty, as Moses did. Some scholars believe that there must have been at least two St. Patricks whose deeds have been ascribed to one man. According to them, this would also account for the long life span. The Irish scholar James Carney discounts this theory, holding that St. Patrick arrived in Ireland in 461 and not in the widely accepted 432. He says that " the Patrick of 432-461 is. . . merely a chronological phantom.
