Extractions: zhejiang online news: I experienced my first St. Patrick's Day in China in Jinzhou in 1998. It was a very strange experience I experienced my first St. Patrick's Day in China at a REAL Irish bar (The Shamrock - owned and operated by a real Irishwoman), in Hangzhou in 2003. For St. Paddy's Day - 2004, it was back to the Shamrock again. Same silly hats, more people, lots of Guiness. Again, for a few hours, we completely forgot we were in China. When I got home late that evening, some of my Chinese neighbors were having a late night meal of their own in the small shop next to my building. So I sat down, had some noodles and (more) beer with them, and introduced them to the St. Patrick's Day traditions (complete with silly hats). Here's a collection of pics from St. Pat's Day at The Shamrock in Hangzhou-2004 followed by a collection from late night noodles and beer with my neighbors.

It was a very strange experience In China St. Patrick's Day is known as Ai Er Lan Guo Qing Jie (Ireland National Day). A measure of the rapid development of China's opening up to the world can be found on this page in pictures. The setting: The Shamrock Bar in Hangzhou. The Shamrock is a GREAT Irish Pub opened late last year in Hangzhou. It is very strange (by Chinese standards) for three reasons: 1. It looks and feels exactly like a European pub - complete with western style service and amenities. Step inside and you will forget you are in China. 2. This European-feel pub is located smack dab in the middle of the finest example of Song Dynasty street-life in Hangzhou - the oldest street still existing in Hangzhou dating back to the Song Dynasty.

Evidently he was a great traveller in Celtic Countries and places such as Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland received his name. St Patrick is noted for driving the snakes out of Ireland. There are many different tales of him standing on a hill using a wooden staff driving the serpents into the sea banishing them forever from Ireland`s shores.

Extractions: deliverance from the demonic St. Patrick was born in 432 in Scotland. When he was quite young, he was taken into slavery and brought to Ireland (relocation). Slavery is evil. It is child-labor....it is separation from home and great heart break. It is when you are exploited by another to his advantage; and it is hard labor with no decent wages.....no economic way to break out of the slavery cycle. You become property , rather than a person. Ireland in the 5th Century was steeped in deep darkness and the occult. Mythology permeated every aspect of the people's lives. They were totally a pagan nation. They believed that the god of fire was to be reborn each Spring, by having their tribal king light the first fire of the year. From his fire alone, the people would kindle their own homes. But St. Patrick lit his own fire, and for this act he was brought before the king. To which St. Patrick replied, "Here am I" [Isaiah 6:8]. St. Patrick was bold in his beliefs. From that point on, St. Patrick was anointed and appointed by God to preach to this heathen nation. He lit the fire of the Gospel which has not been extinguished for approximately 1600 years.

Extractions: Happy Saint Patrick's Day! The Legend of the Shamrock Long ago when Ireland was the land of the Druids, there was a great Bishop, Patrick by name, who came to teach the word of God throughout the country. This saint, for he was indeed a saint, was well-loved everywhere he went. One day, however, a group of his followers came to him and admitted that it was difficult for them to believe in the doctrne of the Holy Trinity. Saint Patrick reflected for a moment and the, stooping down, he plucked a leaf from the shamrock and held it before them, bidding them to behold the living example of the "Three-in-One". The simple beauty of this explanation convinced these skeptics, and from that day the Shamrock has been revered throughout Ireland. ON the 17th of March, wherever true sons and daughters of Erin gather, the Shamrock is proudly worn as a symbol of the faith that is IRELAND!
Extractions: A History of Saint Patrick (Thanks to A Bit o' Blarney.com for the history of St Patrick) St. Patrick was born to Catholic parents about 385 in Britain. His father was a nobleman and a deacon. But Patrick's privileged life came to an end at age 16 when he was captured by slave raiders from Ireland. With a large group of prisoners, he was transported to the then pagan island. Sold as a slave to a king in the northeast, Patrick had the lonely task of tending the pigs and sheep. In the midst of these harsh living conditions, Patrick's faith flourished as he turned to God in prayer. After being held captive for six years, he heard a voice in his sleep say, "Soon you will go back to your homeland." A short time later, he heard the same voice say, "Your ship is ready." Trusting in God, Patrick set out on a 200-mile journey through unknown territory. When he arrived at the ship, the captain at first refused to take him. But Patrick prayed to God for help, and the captain changed his mind. Then began a lifetime of dedicating his life to becoming a priest. He envisioned returning to Ireland to teach the Irish about Christianity.

Extractions: The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn, and he almost didn't get the job of bishop of Ireland because he lacked the required scholarship. Far from being a saint, until he was 16, he considered himself a pagan. At that age, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders that raided his village. During his captivity, he became closer to God. He escaped from slavery after six years and went to Gaul where he studied in the monastery under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for a period of twelve years. During his training he became aware that his calling was to convert the pagans to Christianity. His wishes were to return to Ireland, to convert the native pagans to Christianity. But his superiors instead appointed St. Palladius. But two years later, Palladius transferred to Scotland. Patrick, having adopted that Christian name earlier, was then appointed as second bishop to Ireland. Patrick was quite successful at winning converts. And this fact upset the Celtic Druids. Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to Christianity.

Now the painting begins! Have them paint the interior of shamrock with the green tempera as it comes from the bottle. Have children add some green paint to white paint to make a tint of green OR have them add black to green to make a shade of green. Using their own color, start painting the exterior of the shamrock. I have had kids paint the whole thing, or put explosion lines, or curls, or more shamrocks, its up to them. I allow trading of colors so that there are a variety of colors on some papers. This is a fun way to provide painting experiences with a skill (tints and shades). Please remember to add green to white, and black to green, otherwise you will use way too much paint to obtain the desired colors
