SRI LANKA PICTURES The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is an island in the Indian Ocean, separated from south-east India (Tamil Nadu state) by the Palk Strait. It is almost linked to the Indian mainland by Adams Bridge, an atoll barrier, mostly submerged, lying between the offshore island of Mannar and India itself. Area: 65,610 sq km (25,332 sq miles). Topography: Beyond the coastal plains, Sri Lankas topography is dominated by an outstandingly beautiful central mountain massif of gneiss rock, with the highest point at Pidurutalagala (2,524m). The holy Adams Peak (2,243m) is so called from a mark at the top in the likeness of a human footprint, variously attributed as the print of the Buddha, Vishnu or Adam, and is a place of pilgrimage. The coastal plains are broader in the north, tapering off in the long low-lying Jaffna peninsula. Several fast-flowing non-navigable rivers arise in the mountains. The Mahaweli Ganga, from which hydroelectric power is obtained, is the longest at 322km. Climate: Tropical. The lowlands are always hot, particularly from March to May. The highlands are cooler. During December and January there is occasional frost on very high ground, e.g. at Nuwara Eliya. The dry season is March to mid-May. The south-west monsoon season lasts from mid-May to September, the north-east monsoon season from November to March.

Tamils of Sri Lankan origin form around 12% of the population and live in the north and the east. Indian Tamils, a distinct ethnic group, represent 6% of the population and were brought in the 19th century by the British to work in the plantations. They tend to live in south-central Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka claims the world's second oldest continuous written history - but history and religious mythology have played a key role in the development of communal animosity. Extractions: Regional Centre for Strategic Studies May 31, 2001 According to Mr. Gooneratne, the changing Sri Lanka caught little, if any attention in neighboring India, that is, until Indira Gandhi resumed power in 1980. Mrs. Gandhi grew increasingly suspicious of the southern island and soon began to view its relationship with the West as a threat to India. She believed that Sri Lanka had to be taught a lesson, Mr. Gooneratne claimed. Thus, when a growing and organized insurgency of the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka rose in opposition to the government, India responded by arming them. By this time, Mr. Gooneratne argued, India had upgraded its military arsenal to include nuclear submarines, surface-to-air missiles, satellites, and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Under Mrs. Gandhi, therefore, India began to perceive itself as an international force to be reckoned with, and espoused a Monroesqe, so-called "Indira Doctrine," which proclaimed to the world, in a Texan sort of way, "Don't mess with South Asia." That is, foreign powers were no longer to meddle with politics in the region, especially when inimical to India's interest.

In 1344, Ibn Batuta found Moorish vessels in the harbour. The Portuguese came in 1505, blown ashore on their way to the Maldives. In 1640 Galle was taken by the Dutch at such a heavy cost to life that it also came to be known as "Gold in Malacca, lead in Galle." The harbour gate has over it on the inside, the "Cock of Galle" and on the outside, the British Lion. The Portuguese and Dutch in fact once mistook the name Galle for Latin "Gallus" or "Cock." The Galle Fort today is the best preserved Dutch Fort on the island with many colonial homes and a few hotels but strangely not a single restaurant inside the Fort area. Still, this unique old settlement has a quiet charm of its own with minimal traffic and most of its daytime residents mainly government workers leaving the Fort in the evenings. This leaves the Fort to its own after 6 pm.

The Sinhalese, a distinct ethnic group speaking the Sinhala (see Glossary) language and practicing a variant of Theravada Buddhism, comprise the majority74 percentof the population, and their values dominate public life. There are, however, substantial minority groups. The Tamils, speaking the Tamil language and generally practicing Hinduism, comprise almost 18 percent of the population. Muslims, many of whom speak Tamil as their main language, make up 7 percent of the populace. Each of the main ethnic groups is subdivided into several major categories, depending on variables of religion or geography. There also are sizable Christian minorities among the Sinhalese and Tamil. Extractions: 1 November, 1995 Terrorists attacked the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation refinery and oil storage installations in Colombo in the early hours of October 20th causing several deaths and massive fires in the storage areas. Fires of this magnitude had not taken place in Sri Lanka previously and the assistance of fire-fighters with experience in fighting oil fires had to be obtained from India. The fires were accompanied by the deposition of oil which was reported by the media to have formed layers around 0.5 metres thick in some places. Some of the oil passed by way of canals and a major river to the sea. Other immediately visible impacts included those on market gardens in nearby areas. The Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISIR) has issued a preliminary report on some aspects of the incident which may be of environmental significance. Based on information supplied by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) the crude and refined products presumed destroyed in a two day period were 39,000 tonnes of crude oil, 35,000 tonnes of diesel and 5000 tonnes of kerosene. Taking into account the sulphur contents of the oil products destroyed it was estimated that the oxides of sulphur produced during the fires could have been around 1690 tonnes (when calculated as sulphur dioxide). As regards oxides of nitrogen (calculated as nitrogen dioxide) the total produced could have been around 780 tonnes (including that resulting from the reaction of gaseous nitrogen with oxygen at high temperatures).
