Extractions: References Over the last few years, there has been an explosive growth in electronic communication through the Internet. Nowhere has this been more evident than in the development of the World Wide Web (WWW). The Web is a new method for distributing information of many types. It is structured in a server-client clickable links. These links may jump to another page of text, or an image, or another Web site. Each Web site is a collection of linked documents. These can incorporate text, photographs, images, and even sounds and video clips. Sites have a Home Page that acts as an introduction and index to other documents. Web documents can include links to material that is actually stored on computers at other locations, allowing information to be combined and presented in many different ways. Physically, therefore, a Web document can combine material that resides on several different computers, perhaps in several different countries, and present it as a seamless whole to the user. Thus, the WWW is an extremely powerful and versatile means of presenting and distributing data. Web sites can be accessed from anywhere in the world and most are available 24 hours a day, allowing presentations to reach a massive readership very quickly.

Extractions: Websites can be an important resource for providing patients with information about their disease, whether they are newly diagnosed, or have been living with the condition for some time. You will also be providing support to carers, who often feel that they cannot ask their loved ones the questions about the disease. The information may also be useful for doctors, who can refer patients to it for more information. Making a website relevant and useful is probably the biggest challenge in developing content. Websites need to be inviting, and present the right level of information for the audience. It is important to decide which information needs to be presented on the screen, and which can be downloaded and read later.

Extractions: Vol. 3, No. 3, September 1983 Professional Associations and the Regulation of Standard-setting Hedvah L. Shuchman, Director, Technology Assessment Center, New York Recent public policy on standards and certification reflects both the high value placed on the voluntary standard setting system and serious concern that the system is being misused to exclude competitors and injure consumers. Disagreement has arisen over the means for remedying the anticompetitive consequences of some standard-setting activities. When government intervenes in an open market, the choice of regulatory approach must be measured by the extent to which it creates incentives for compliance, the ease with which it can be administratively enforced and the costs it imposes. Critics of perceived excessive regulation argue that the government must be careful not to discourage productive standard setting activity or to impose costs without providing offsetting benefits. However, the courts
