MYRMECOMORPHY AND MYRMECOPHILY IN SPIDERS: A REVIEW Paula E. Cushing Wooster, Ohio 44691 Abstract Myrmecomorphs are arthropods that have evolved a morphological resemblance to ants. Myrmecophiles are arthropods that live in or near ant nests and are considered true symbionts. The literature and natural history information about spider myrmecomorphs and myrmecophiles are reviewed. Myrmecomorphy in spiders is generally considered a type of Batesian mimicry in which spiders are gaining protection from predators through their resemblance to aggressive or unpalatable ants. Selection pressure from spider predators and eggsac parasites may trigger greater integration into ant colonies among myrmecophilic spiders. Key Words: Araneae, symbiont, ant-mimicry, ant-associates

ABS Young Investigator Award 1998 - H. Kern Reeve toward female cooperators in social spiders, and the Partitioning of reproduction in animal societies motherdaughter versus sibling associations. http://www.animalbehavior.org/ABS/Stars/ONI/Reeve.html
Extractions: hkr1@cornell.edu The general goals of my research are to understand the principles governing the evolution of animal societies and, especially, to investigate the evolutionary causes and consequences of cooperation and conflict within these societies. My current research focuses on the problem of how the members of an animal society resolve potential conflicts over how to divide up overall group reproduction. In particular, I have extended and tested models predicting the conditions under which a dominant member of a society should concede reproduction to a subordinate member as an incentive for the subordinate to stay in the group and help the dominant. To test these "transactional" models of reproductive partitioning (known also as "optimal skew" and "concessions" models), I have examined whether naturally co-nesting social wasp queens divide up reproduction according to relatedness, fighting ability, and ecological factors in the ways predicted by the models. Current evidence suggests that the social contract models may apply widely to animal societies. My ultimate aim for this line of research is to develop a rigorous, empirically well-tested, general theory of the fundamental properties of animal societies as a function of colony genetic structure, relative fighting abilities of colony members, benefits of colony cooperation and opportunities for solitary reproduction. If the transactional models continue to prove correct, for the first time it will be possible to predict quantitatively multiple, complex properties of both natural and manipulated social systems with advance knowledge of only a few key social parameters.

Research Interests Of Daniel I. Rubenstein femalefemale and male-female associations from developing rules that shape multilevel societies where breeding I use waterstriders, crayfish, spiders and fish http://www.princeton.edu/~psych/PsychSite/ns_rubenstein.html
Extractions: My interests focus on animal behavior, especially its evolution and adaptive value. Typically, behavior that enhances an individual's survival or reproductive prospects is favored by natural selection. By using mathematical models and by collecting data from field observations or experiments I search for the general rules that govern how animals make decisions about foraging, fighting and mating strategies. In the laboratory I use fish to identify the rules underlying female choice of males and I use waterstriders, crayfish, spiders and fish to understand why in some competitive situations interactions escalate to dangerous levels involving physical aggression whereas in others they are settled peacefully via conventional display. I am also engaged in a series of experiments exploring the decision-making process individual fish use when joining groups. By varying test group size and distance we can examine how individuals make choices as to which group to join. That some species are more sensitive to small differences in group size, whereas others are not and that response time is longer in some species than others, suggests that perceptual constraints play an important role in decision-making. Coupling the mechanistic (the 'hows') with the functional or evolutionary (the 'whys') aspects of behavior is the only way to gain a complete understanding of behavior in natural settings. Armed with this multilevel understanding, a realistic foundation can then be developed for unraveling the neural bases of behavior. Using simple sensory schemes and behavioral rules I am developing spatially explicit models to explore how animals form social groups and migrate over landscapes of different structure.
