Extractions: Expenses for higher education offer taxpayers many ways to reduce their income taxes. This can provide some relief from the high cost of college, graduate school, and other higher education courses. Careful planning before the expenses are incurred will assure that you receive the full benefit of these complicated tax breaks. The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 added many enhancements to existing tax breaks. It also established the new Higher Education Expense Deduction. Please note, however, that all the provisions of that act will "sunset" on December 31, 2010 unless new legislation extends them. The tax breaks would then revert to the rules in effect prior to the 2001 legislation. (To add to the confusion, the Higher Education Expense Deduction is scheduled to expire at the end of 2005.) If you will be paying for higher education expenses after 2010, keep in mind that you may be taking distributions from savings plans and claiming tax breaks under the more stringent rules that are referenced in this publication as being in effect for the year 2001. This website focuses on the tax aspects of several ways to pay for or take deductions for higher education expenses. You will need to also weigh other advantages or disadvantages in choosing the tax breaks you will use. Other aspects may be equally or even more important in planning how to handle education expenses.
