Evans' account of the Naval Battle of Santiago The USS IOWA was the very newest American battleship in the Spanish-American War. Like the INDIANA class, IOWA was classified as a "Seagoing Coastline Battleship", but she was a better sea boat than the earlier battleships. She took part in the Battle of Santiago on July 3, 1898. USS IOWA was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet, and was ordered to blockade duty off Santiago de Cuba on May 28, 1898. She was the first US ship to sight Admiral Cervera's Spanish ships coming out of the channel on July 3, and fired the first shot in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. In a 20-minute duel with Spanish cruisers MARIA TERESA and OQUENDO , IOWA's effective fire helped set both ships aflame and drive them upon the beach. Later in the engagement, IOWA joined with INDIANA and GLOUCESTER in destroying the Torpedo Boat Destroyers PLUTON and FUROR . IOWA then turned her attention to the Spanish cruiser VIZCAYA which she pursued until the Spanish ship was run aground and surrendered.     Extractions: CW2 David L. Snook In the spring and summer of 1898, the United States waged a brief but decisive war against Spanish colonial forces in Cuba and the Philippine Islands. One cause of the war was revulsion among Americans against the ruthless tactics employed by Spain to suppress a revolt in its colony of Cuba. Another was the growing feeling that America’s "manifest destiny" did not end at the Pacific shore. Many Americans had come to believe that the future prosperity of the nation required it to play an active role in the worldwide scramble for colonial possessions. Secretary of State John Hay described the Spanish-American War as that "splendid little war." America’s victory in this conflict marked the emergence of the United States as a world power. The Spanish-American War was fought in two theaters, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. A U. S. naval force under Commodore (soon to be Admiral) George Dewey defeated the Spanish Pacific Fleet at Manila Bay in the Philippine Islands in May of 1898. The actual occupation of Manila was delayed until August, after the arrival of 11,000 troops from the United States. Commanded by Major General Wesley Merritt, the Americans, with the support of Filipino revolutionaries, forced the Spanish garrison to capitulate on August 14. Meanwhile, for most Americans, the central focus of the war was Cuba. By the end of June, a combined force of almost 18,000 regular and volunteer troops commanded by rotund but capable Major General William Shafter, had landed in Cuba. General Shafter weighed over 300 pounds and, at one point during the hostilities, while suffering from heat exhaustion, he had to be carried from place to place on a makeshift litter made from a door

    Extractions: Back to KSGenWeb Main Page These rosters were taken with permission from the book "Fighting Twentieth: An Account of the Kansas Volunteers in the Spanish American War. 1898-1899" by John A. Ostertag. He in turn took much of his information from a small booklet printed in the Fall of 1899 upon the return of the men who were called the Fighting Twentieth of Kansas. It is a documentation of Kansas youth who answered President McKinley's call for 120,000 volunteers to wage war against Spain. John's book also contains additional historical accounts, photographs and other information not included in this web page. The book is still in print and may be ordered from John by writing to him at 3005 Charles, St. Joseph, MO 64501-3342. Cost is $15. The men arrived at Camp Leedy in Topeka, Kansas and after six rain sodden weeks, were entrained to San Francisco - only to cool their heels for much longer than any of them expected or desired. They were placed in undesirable quarters and no uniforms were issued for several weeks due to snarled red tape in the War Department. They were the first to arrive at San Francisco and about the last to leave for Manila instead of Cuba, as first believed.

After extensive research, I have compiled a ten-step flowchart analysis showing the transfer of Cuban sovereignty from the Spanish government to the Cuban government, covering the period of July 1898 to May 1902. Full conclusions regarding the status of Cuba in the world as of May 20, 1902 are offered at the end. Flowchart Analysis of the Transfer of Sovereignty Taiwan Prior to 1945, the sovereignty of Taiwan was originally held by Japan. However, somewhere in the following years (or decades) this sovereignty apparently became misplaced, and today Taiwan is not recognized as a sovereign nation. The United Nations has repeatedly failed to consider Taiwan's application for membership to either the UN or its subsidiary agencies (such as the World Health Organization) precisely because the world community does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation.

    Extractions: The Spanish-American War On February 15th, 260 American sailors were killed when the battleship Maine blew up and sank in Havana harbor. The war with Spain began in April 1898, when Major General William Shafter, a former commander of the 24th Infantry led an expeditionary force of over 17,000 men, including nearly 3,000 Black regulars, into Cuba. Although the Spanish American War was ostensibly fought to liberate Caribbean and Philippine islanders from Spanish oppression, the participation of Buffalo Soldier and Black volunteer regiments in this war was not without controversy. African Americans questioned whether they, who were deprived of civil rights by federal and state laws and were being lynched and terrorized in the South, should fight for a government that recognized them as a citizen in name only. Articles in the Black press during the war showed a diversity of opinion in the African American community.

Judging from the work of leading film historians, it would be difficult to overestimate the importance of the Spanish-American War to a fledgling American film industry in the wake of cinema's putative novelty year. In "Commercial Warfare and the Spanish-American War, 1897-1898," Charles Musser argues that "with the onset of the Spanish-American War the motion picture industry discovered a new role and exploited it, gaining in confidence as a result.... It was the ongoing production of a few firms [e.g., Biograph and Edison]," writes Musser, "that provided the commercial foundation for the American industry, and it was the war that gave this sector new life" ( Emergence of Cinema Robert C.
