One concept for an aircraft with directed energy weapons shows a laser being fired from the aft position in a C-130 and a high-power microwave device from forward of the wing. The first combat applications, probably involving high-power microwaves (HPM) used as antielectronics weapons, will appear within the next 4-5 years, say top Raytheon officials. A short, intense energy surge can scramble computer memories and damage electronic components. Raytheon is already involved in most of the major directed energy programs. The company is two years into a project that would put a laser weapon on Lockheed Martin's multiservice, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. It also is one of the contractors asked to study the design of a high-power microwave weapon for Boeing's X-45 unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV). Moreover, it has won the DD-X contract for next-generation U.S. Navy ships. Its electric drive will one day power a laser-based air defense system. An anti-personnel device using high-power microwaves to heat water in the skin can inflict enough pain to cause crowds to disperse.

    Extractions: Return to Industry Projects Index The British-led Beagle 2 project is the probe for the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express mission. The probe consists of the Entry, Descent and Landing System (EDLS) and the lander itself. The aim of the mission is to study the geology of the planet for evidence relating to past life on Mars. To achieve this, the Beagle 2 lander has a robotic arm for manipulating scientific instruments and the mole (also called Pluto – planetary undersurface tool) for collecting samples. The Mars Express Spacecraft is due to be launched in June 2003 from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on a Soyuz/Fregat rocket supplied by Starsem. The mission is due to arrive at Mars in December 2003. ENTRY, DESCENT AND LANDING SYSTEM (EDLS) Five days before the Mars Express reaches its destination, Beagle 2 will be released from the spacecraft by the spring-powered spinup and eject mechanism (SUEM) which will push the probe away whilst making it spin on its axis for stability. The EDLS then takes over for the actual entry, descent and landing of the Beagle 2 lander. The EDLS has three separate subsystems:

Since the 1972 discovery of Oxygen in the Earth's magnetosphere by this group, we have been a leader in the investigation of plasma composition in the Earth's magnetosphere and near comets. We have flown plasma composition experiments on the ISEE DE AMPTE , and CRRES magnetospheric missions and we have been co-investigators on the Giotto cometary mission. Currently, we have operating composition experiments on the FAST and POLAR missions. Future missions include the IMAGE magnetospheric mission and the Rosetta cometary mission as well as collaboration on the Cluster magnetospheric mission. Other activities within our group include design of small, free-flying magnetometers for space applications, all sky imaging of the aurora from the Antarctic, and planning future space plasmas missions.

PROJECT RATIONALE The Ascender sub-orbital spaceplane is designed to carry passengers on space experience flights and spearhead low cost access to space. It has also been projected with the aim to win the "X prize". The "X prize" is an international contest designed to jump start the development of low cost, reusable launch vehicles. It offers a prize of $10 million to the first competitor who successfully flies a vehicle with passengers for up to 100km, twice. Ascender is designed to be the first sub-orbital aeroplane since the X-15 (operative from late 1950s to late 1960s), and the first ever to carry passengers to space. The backers hope it will start a sub-orbital space tourism business that would build up the credibility needed for full orbital tourism. It is based on a design included in a feasibility study for the European Space Agency. Four leading British aerospace companies took part in this study, Dowty Aerospace Limited, Dunlop Aerospace Limited, Pilkington Aerospace Limited and Ricardo Aerospace Limited. PROJECT TIMESCALE The first flight should take place in about three years time, 2003/2004. The first commercial flight should be available to the public in 2007/2008.

So far all attempts to detect transmissions from the British and European Space Agency (ESA) craft, which was due to land on Mars on Christmas day, have failed. But speaking at a press conference at the Open University offices in London, the minister said: "While we are disappointed that things have not gone to plan, we are determined that the search should go on - that's both the search to make contact with Beagle 2, and to answer long-term the question of whether or not there's life on Mars." Lord Sainsbury added: "We need to be working with ESA to ensure that in some form there is a Beagle 3, which takes forward this technology."
