2001: A Space Odyssey A short essay on the movie's special effects, with a blurb about the HAL/IBM dispute. http://www.elstree.co.uk/2001.html
Extractions: Stanley Kubrik died on 7th March 1999 at his home in Hertforshire, 666 days before the 1st January 2001. 2001 was released in 1968 and proved a landmark movie for its genre and generation. The fact that 2001 is not easily understood on its first viewing was a source of much additional box office returns as people went back again and again to watch it in the hope that it would make more sense the more that they saw it. 2001 was not an instant hit, but the audiences started rolling in as a result of word of mouth referrals. Young people in particular picked up on 2001 as more of a movie to be experienced even if not entirely understood, especially the psychedelic images in the "tunnel of light" towards the end of the film which were claimed to be the closest thing to an LSD trip without actually taking the drug. The visually stunning nature of the film has earned 2001 its place in cinema history. Much dialogue and a narrator were removed from the original script, Stanley Kubrick relying on his mastery of the visual language of film to tell the story. The original concept came from the Arthur C. Clarke short story "The Sentinel". Stanley Kubrick and Arthur.C.Clarke wrote the original screenplay for 2001:A Space Odyssey. Arthur C. Clarke went away to turn the screenplay into the 2001 novel, and when Stanley Kubrick began filming changed the shooting script, and in addition removed many entire scenes from the film in the editing. Editing was allegedly done in part on the QE2 on his way to the Hollywood Premier of 2001 (Stanley Kubrick will not travel by air).

Extractions: Adventure Sites Archives Articles Independent Developers ... Play Games! The Unofficial, Unexpurgurated, Unassuming Complete History of Sierra's Space Quest By Adam Rodman Back in 1985, Sierra On-Line was a small company based in Seattle that developed adventure games. After the surprising success of Roberta Williams' game, King's Quest, two of the Sierra members that had worked on it approached CEO Ken Williams with a proposition: could they make a humorous science-fiction adventure game based on the trials of an intergalactic janitor? Their names: Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe, a programmer and an artist, respectively. Ken was, to say the least, skeptical. So the two valiant programmers put together a demo, which would later become the first four levels of Space Quest 1: The Sarien Encounter. Scott programmed, Mark did the art, and Ken Williams absolutely loved the demo. In the mid-1980s, point-and-click games weren't even considered a possibility by developers. Graphic adventure games were little more than souped-up versions of text-only games.

Interactive Experiments In Gravity Try an experiment that illustrates the gravitational attraction between two objects or use a Java applet to understand how orbits work in strongly curved spacetime. http://www.fourmilab.ch/gravitation/
Extractions: This directory contains documents and interactive Java applets which explore aspects of both Newton's theory of universal gravitation and Einstein's general relativity. The first two installments in the series are now available. We live our entire lives within the Earth's gravitational field, yet rarely if ever do we experience the universality of gravitation: that every object in the universe attracts and is attracted by every other. This page presents a "basement science" experiment which reveals the gravitational attraction between objects less than a kilogram in mass. Knowledge in antiquity suggesting gravitation was universal is discussed, and the feasibility of an experimental test using only materials and techniques of the era is explored. Close-in orbits around compact massive objects such as neutron stars and black holes trace out paths drastically different from the ellipses of Kepler's Laws. Since the velocity of an orbiting object cannot attain or exceed the speed of light, Einstein's general relativity predicts a different energy curve, resulting in precession absent in Newton's theory. This page includes an interactive applet that lets you explore such orbits and explains the theory behind them.

Extractions: Space Art Limited Edition Prints by David Flynn Welcome Space art is more than just pictures of other planets. In visualising scenes from outside our world we consciously think of the future - a promising future, full of hope. I have created a series of oil paintings from which these prints have been generated. Hopefully these paintings have the appearence of being painted from real life without trying to present an almost photographic image. Each print is limited to 395 and each is signed and numbered by me. All pictures are unframed. Theory Physics of the inner magnetosphere http://www.dartmouth.edu/~spacephy/theory.html
Extractions: This synergistic research effort is exploring and advancing theoretical understanding of the causal agents, coupling, scale-interactions, and particle kinetics of magnetospheric and ionospheric variability in the ultra-low-frequency regime (time scales from 1 sec to 30 min). Magnetotail transients and oscillations (periods of 10-30 min), magnetospheric boundary and dayside merging transients and pulsations (1-10 min), geomagnetic cavity and field line eigenmodes (0.5-10 min), and auroral resonator/cavity dynamics (1-30 sec) are being investigated via: Dynamic, global MHD simulation of the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction
Office Space Review of the film http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/ebert_reviews/1999/02/021903.html
Extractions: Zwecker (R) Peter: Ron Livingston Joanna: Jennifer Aniston Milton: Stephen Root Bill Lumbergh: Gary Cole Michael Bolton: David Herman Samir: Ajay Naidu Tom Smykowski: Richard Riehle Lawrence: Diedrich Bader Anne: Alexandra Wentworth Written and directed by Mike Judge, based on his ``Milton'' animated shorts. Running time: 90 minutes. Rated R (for language and brief sexuality). BY ROGER EBERT Mike Judge's ``Office Space'' is a comic cry of rage against the nightmare of modern office life. It has many of the same complaints as ``Dilbert'' and the movie ``Clockwatchers'' and, for that matter, the works of Kafka and the Book of Job. It is about work that crushes the spirit. Office cubicles are cells, supervisors are the wardens, and modern management theory is skewed to employ as many managers and as few workers as possible. As the movie opens, a cubicle slave named Peter (Ron Livingston) is being reminded by his smarmy supervisor (Gary Cole) that all reports now carry a cover sheet. ``Yes, I know,'' he says. ``I forgot. It was a silly mistake. It won't happen again.'' Before long another manager reminds him about the cover sheets. ``Yes, I know,'' he says. Then another manager. And another. Logic suggests that when more than one supervisor conveys the same trivial information, their jobs overlap, and all supervisors after the first one should be shredded.

It's tedious work looking through endless layers of directories to find those files that are filling up your drive. What you need is a way to see at a glance where all your space has gone. That's where Space comes in handy. Space is a Windows application that offers you several ways of displaying and quickly pointing out the most space-hungry of directories and files on your drives. And Space isn't limited to just hard drives. Network shares and FTP accounts can be scanned; particularly useful for checking remote fileservers, or your webspace usage. Space can also print displays of the disk usage, and export the collected information in CSV format for importing into other programs.

Into The Heavens A space exploration game. Has storyline and signups. http://www.intotheheavens.com/
Extractions: In the year 1912 humanity at last had created the first spaceship that could take off, land, and take off again with a small crew of 10 passengers. And just as when the first ships sailed across the sea to return again , the prospect of space colonization and exploration had now become possible. By 1925 humanity created the first civilian space station, attached a few small engines and propelled it into space with the hope of colonizating other planets for mining resources for deeper exploration. By 2101 technology had come a long way. That same trip outside our galaxy could be done within a day. Space Merchants proliferated the skies as they transported resources to the center. The first mining center was established, technology is growing, the stars are coming into grasp. How it works: Space exploration is still at it's infant stages but those stars no longer belong to billionaires, now the average entrepeneure can buy an old ship, trade a few goods, make some money, help the galaxy and then go on to settle planets, mine them and develop their own technologies. If they are good they could even buy a space station and send it out to explore the unknown reaches of the heavens and make use of its advanced labratories to design and sell ships, engines and other technologies. Others have speculated on what it would be like, they designed computer simulations full of aliens, pre-defined planets and technologies. This is not like that. We are starting from Earth and space is still undefined. Who knows what the planets will hold until humanity gets close enough to scan them. Who knows what lessons we will learn until we walk upon them? Who knows the extent of the technology we will create or what they will look like? It all depends on how much resources we find and sure, you can even design how it looks.
