Extractions: Teacher and Administrator Exodus Continues Who Will Teach The Children? Only a fourth of the teachers who left their job at the end of the 1999-2000 school year will be teaching in another South Dakota school district this fall. About the survey In May local education association presidents were asked to report the number of teachers leaving the district and the reasons for leaving. In September, SDEA and SASD did a follow-up survey. Char Gatje, Director of Research and Technology Service at SDEA, says that with the follow-up survey this fall, she received returns from 150 of the school districts in South Dakota. Gatje listed the major findings of the survey as: Only 25% of the teachers and only 23% of the administrators who left their position at the end of the last school year are in education positions in South Dakota this fall. Retirement is a major factor with 22% of the teachers and 36% of the administrators listing retirement as their reason for leaving. 21% of the teachers gave leaving the profession or a teaching job in another state as their reason for leaving. The number for administrators is similar, 22% took a job in another state or left the profession. In the face of a severe teacher shortage, South Dakota schools remain concerned about quality of teaching. Non-renewal of contract or reduction in force was the reason for leaving for 12% of the teachers and 3% of the administrators.
