Students entered in groups, receiving a list of questions. To get the answers, students visited the booths and talked with the representatives. Healthy breakfast items were displayed and shared. Students were also able to test hearing, vision, sugar-level and fitness, as well as talk with eating disorder, and drug and alcohol abuse experts. When a student's list of questions was answered, it was deposited into a drum from which the door prize winners were selected. Prizes included bowling certificates, bicycle helmets and movie passes. The public was invited to attend the fair for the last hour of each day. It was evident that the fair had an impact, as the health fair organizer (Linda Bannwarth, School Nurse) received numerous phone calls from parents asking to verify the information their children brought home from the event!

According to the CDC, it is the country's sixth leading cause of death by disease. Approximately 17 million Americans have diabetes, but one-third of those are undiagnosed. As of December 2003, forty-six states have some type of laws requiring health insurance coverage to include treatment for diabetes. The states not included are Alabama, Idaho, North Dakota and Ohio. In 2001, laws were signed in Michigan, Montana, Oregon and Wyoming. In 2002, Georgia and Wisconsin each passed an expansion of current coverage requirements. In 2003 the Hawaii adopted a resolution to clarify its mandate of diabetes education coverage. About 17 million Americans have diabetes today, including about 16 million with Type 2. In addition, at least 16 million more Americans have pre-diabetes a condition that raises a person's risk of getting type 2 diabetes. However, a diagnosis of pre-diabetes does not mean that diabetes is inevitable, and the new campaign aims at encouraging people to take modest steps that will reduce their risks. Nationally, diabetes has increased nearly 50 percent in the past 10 years alone, according to CDC estimates.
