Extractions: South Dakota Workforce Development Council The SD Workforce Development Council was formed in 1994 to plan and evaluate job training and education programs in South Dakota. The single council assumed the duties of four previous boards: Private Industry Council Job Training Coordinating Council Council on Vocational Education School to Work Advisory Board One of the principal functions of the Workforce Development Council is to set policy and oversee implementation of Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) programs in South Dakota. The council selects service providers and evaluates progress toward program goals. In addition to JTPA, the council works closely with the Division of Workforce and Career Preparation, the Governor's Office of Economic Development, the Departments of Human Services and Social Services and other state agencies. The council also prepares and oversees South Dakota's implementation of the School-to-Work Initiative, including the establishment of local School-to-Work partnerships. Members of the Workforce Development Council represent various business, labor and education interests. A majority of its members are from the private sector. Council membership also includes representatives of the state departments of Labor, Education, Human Services, the Governor's Office of Economic Development and the Board of Regents. TV Guide KEY ADMINISTRATIVE BIOGRAPHIES Friday, June 11, 2004 Dr. Roger DeGroot Tea Primary/Middle School Principal Dr. Roger DeGroot is currently in his 22nd year as Elementary/Middle School Principal for the Lennox School District in Tea, SD. Previously, he spent five years as a teacher in the Creighton Public Schools in Creighton, NE. During this time he also handled coaching duties. Dr. DeGroot is a South Dakota native who spent his first two years of education in a one- room school located near Canistota. He then moved to Sioux Falls where he finished grades 3-12. Dr. DeGroot furthered his education in 1971 at Dakota State College in Madison where he received his BS Degree in Elementary Education. His thirst for knowledge led him to receiving his MA Degree in Elementary School Administration at Wayne State College in 1980, his Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from USD in 1987, and finally receiving his Doctorate Degree in Education from USD in 1995. Over the past 22 years, Dr. DeGroot has developed and implemented several programs in his schools. Some of those include: parent volunteer programs, student recognition programs, Math Counts, Tea's A Team, special interest classes, motivational reading month, development of a middle school curriculum, and implementation of an innovative middle school scheduling practice-Block Scheduling.

South Dakota has affiliate support groups in Aberdeen, Brookings, Huron, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Watertown and Yankton, as well as two statewide affiliates, one for families of children and adolescents with brain disorders and one for consumers of services for mental illness (brain disorders). This group is known as the Consumer Council. The group for families of children and adolescents is NAMI Northern Hills (formerly called NAMI South Dakota-CAN) and is based in Sturgis. Purpose NAMI South Dakota offers practical support, useful education, sympathy and understanding to people who are living and coping with neurobiologically based brain diseases.
