Recreation programs are essential to the development of the individual, family and community, and they provide an important outlet for relaxation and personal enjoyment. The South Carolina Rural Recreation Project is funded through the Public Service Activities budget of Clemson University and is in partnership with the South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association and the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. The South Carolina Rural Recreation Project (SCRRP) is designed to help small rural communities that are without established recreation programs to develop their recreation potential. Special emphasis is placed on the use of recreation as a medium for youth development within the larger community context. SCRRP assigns a full-time recreation director to each participating community for the summer months, usually from mid-May to mid-August, over a three-year period. The director coordinates local human, financial and physical resources to create programs that focus on low-cost, lifelong activities for all age groups, from preschoolers to senior citizens.
